A week before the LSU football team caps 15 days of spring practice with the annual spring game, the Tigers will hit the field Saturday for their third live scrimmage of spring practice.
The closed scrimmage comes as LSU reaches its 13th workout this spring and will be held in Tiger Stadium.
Coach Les Miles said after Thursday’s practice that the Tigers will spend part of their time Saturday on red-zone situations.
“There are some differences down there,” Miles said. “We’re going to kind of explore what we’re doing.”
The Tigers had their second spring scrimmage way back on March 28 before heading into spring break and taking 12 days off from practicing football.
In the last scrimmage, quarterback Zach Mettenberger hit on 21 of 35 passes for 247 yards, Jarvis Landry caught seven passes for 77 yards, running back Terrance Magee had 76 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries, Kenny Hilliard rushed for 90 yards on 20 carries and Jeremy Hill added 60 on 13.
LSU must replace three of the five players who started on the offensive line in the 2012 season opener, but Miles said Thursday the Tigers appear to have talent and depth in the trenches.
“The offensive line is really developing,” Miles said. “We’re really pretty close to two-deep — minus an injury or two — right now.”
Miles said the young defensive line is also making strides, but said he looks forward to August and seeing where a talented crop of incoming freshmen will fit in.
LSU has its final two workouts of the spring Tuesday and Thursday before returning to Tiger Stadium for the April 20 spring game.
