BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — LSU shortstop Bianka Bell came away with Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week accolades Monday as announced by the league office. It marks the first career weekly award for Bell.
Bell had hits and collected RBIs in all four of LSU’s games last week en route to a .429 batting average, two home runs and 10 RBIs.
Bell had her first career grand slam at No. 25 South Alabama and a career-high four RBIs. Bell’s 10 RBIs accounted for half of LSU’s total for the week.
“We’re extremely pleased for Bianka, and this is a well-deserved honor for her,” coach Beth Torina said. “She’s a special player and one of the most talented freshmen in the SEC. We’re going to need her to continue to produce at a high level as we face a challenging month of April.”
LSU embarks on a nine-game road swing as the Tigers visit Florida State, a team who is receiving votes in the latest edition of the Top 25 polls, for a Wednesday doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m. CDT.
TEAM RETURNS HOME TO FACE TULANE AND UNO: The No. 33 LSU men’s tennis team (9-8) returns home for a doubleheader on Tuesday against Tulane and the University of New Orleans.
The Tigers are coming off a weekend split in Southeastern Conference play with a 4-2 win over Florida and a 4-1 loss to South Carolina on Sunday.
“Tulane is having a very good year,” coach Jeff Brown said. “They’re No. 55 in the rankings and just a few short weeks ago, we were in that same position. They’re a very talented team so we’ll look to be ready to face anyone.”
The Tigers have another match on Wednesday at 3 p.m. against Nicholls State.
