Rabalais: LSU men aren’t great, but they’re pretty good

They recognized LSU’s 1952-53 squad at halftime of Saturday’s game against Mississippi State, the team which made the Tigers’ first run to the Final Four before it was even called the Final Four.

There is little chance anyone will ever mention this 2012-13 LSU team in the same breath as the team of Bob Pettit and Ned Clark. That bunch 60 years ago stamped its greatness on a banner that will hang as long as the Pete Maravich Assembly Center has rafters. This team is trying to make the transition from scruffy to good, with great somewhere long down the line.

But perhaps that transition is moving along faster than expected, certainly faster than it looked back in January when LSU started Southeastern Conference play in a smoking 0-4 crater.

Saturday at the PMAC, the Tigers did what good teams do: They beat the dog (pun intended) out of outmanned Mississippi State.

The final 80-68 score doesn’t reflect the true nature of the Tigers’ dominance in this one — or the disparity of a program on the rise (LSU) and a program that is a shell of its recent former self (State).

This LSU team is still much the work in progress. So while the Tigers were able to stick the fork in the Bulldogs fairly early in the second half — going up 20 for the first time on a top-of-the-key 3-pointer by Shavon Coleman with 11 minutes to go — they were able to let State wriggle back into hailing distance a few times.

Again, this team isn’t going to get folks to stand up in their seats 60 years from now and give an ovation, but it’s a start. And from where LSU began SEC play, with as much forward momentum as the Carnival Triumph drifting through the gulf, to stand at 15-8 overall and 6-6 in conference play, the Tigers look to be ahead of the curve.

“The guys have done a tremendous job continuing to grow as a team and as individuals,” first-year LSU coach Johnny Jones said.

“We had a chance when we started 0-4 to hit the panic button, but we never did that. What was important to us was the next practice and the next game and improving.”

Right now, LSU is an NIT team, a respectable plateau for a program trying to return to the glory days of reaching two Final Fours and two regional finals between 1980 and 1987.

But the Tigers have to keep winning. Beating State at home was a glorified scrimmage compared to Tuesday’s game at Tennessee, which Saturday afternoon deboned a Nerlens Noel-less Kentucky team 88-58. LSU is then home for Alabama and Arkansas, is at Missouri and Texas A&M and home to face Ole Miss.

A 3-3 split gets LSU to 18 wins even before the SEC tournament. LSU went to the NIT at 18-14 last year, so this is doable. If LSU can snap off another upset, then the Tigers can go 4-2 the rest of the way and take 19 wins to Nashville, with the heretofore unimaginable prospect of being a 20-win team come Selection Sunday.

But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. Saturday, LSU was good, and that’s close enough to great for now.

Notice how the GUTLESS PUNKS who criticize Miles anytime an LSU players does ANYTHING that is not proper are nowhere to be found criticizing the midget little Nicky Saban and his squad of THUGS over at GUMP U. Better get used to this being brought up, LOSERS. Every single time Miles gets criticized for anything, this is going to be brought up. Thanks for proving what HYPOCRITES you cowardly nobodies are. Soooo, did little Nicky bail them out or what? The good news is I just saw a great team picture of the Crimson ripple football team. It was hanging on the post office wall on the FBI list of criminals!

Hey witless, where are the other 3 Stooges...you know, nitwit and the other troll from the NOLA forum?

Witless would like to admit that it knows that it has a mental illness but quite frankly IT isn't bright enough to seek the help it needs. IT's one live brain cell doesn't give it the intelligence to try to improve itself and thus remains the scumbag and troll that it is!

Hey Witless, why don't you talk about all the GUMP players leaving the midget's Alabama program and heading towards prison? Boom...you just got destroyed. To be fair, it isn't very hard to wipe off the map an ignorant football fan like yourself. Hey Curly, how's your Toolame program doing?

Witless would like to ADMIT IT is soooo STUPID it didn't recognaize PMAC as symbolic of the LSU basketball program. Hey DUMMY, where do you think LSU basketball is played...the natatorium? I feel sorry for you....truly a pathetic, putrid little troll! Once again, I didn't read the rest of the almost sure drivel in the remainder of your post. I have a rule with flamers and spammers and trolls like yourself. One STUPID statement or LIE and then I quit reading...in your case, that is really one or two sentences. Still the troll with the inferiority complex I see. You may now crawl back under your rock, Curly...or it is Moe or Larry...I get you clueless buffoons mixed up!

". And you don't see players scrambling to leave the program as they did under Johnson either. Not unless you look at Less Miles program. Lots of underclassmen are leaving that are no where near ready for the NFL!! I wonder why? Be careful Lessthebuttkisser, your making references that sound a lot like Less Miles program...........LOL

LamonteSanford never ever mentioned a word about "Jeffry, don't know about the best coaching ever in this state"........ He said in the PMAC!! Where did you get that Milesthebuttkisser? Another one of your twist and spin the way you like it. You should go back and learn how to read? Another one of your generic comments thats totally off base " they try to run on every single rebound they get". I dont know what you have been watching but that is not true. If someone else said that you would call them on of your favorite names "liar". State the facts, the ones you always claim to be an expert on. You remind me of the LSU AD, he was in love with Trent and the big spin master when it came to him. Kind of like you and old Less Miles.

HerbF, I was concerned like you (which is why I was neutral on Jones) that there were too many past LSU influences (Dale Brown, Shaq, etc) vouching for the guy and not enough objective results. Yes, Jones did fine at North Texas but let's face it...that is North Texas. Could he translate it to a major conference? Although quite frankly, the SEC is probably not in the top 5 conferences right now in basketball quality. Well, he has and I agree with you that this is the most excitement in the program since the last of Brady's/Collis Temple's really recruits left. I'm just glad it didn't turn out like the Mike Archer deal after Arnsbarger retired. That was a similar situation where the current and ex-players vouches for elevating Archer and we know how that turned out. But Jones has proven so far he can recruit, involve the fan base, set up a game plan, and improve the players. Trent Johnson could do NONE of those 4 things, and if Jones continues with his success in the future, he can skyrocket up the SEC standings very soon (next season to be exact). Basketball is the easiest sport to turn around due to size of roster and let's face it....the SEC in basketball is a joke compared to the SEC in football. That poorer quality of play makes it that much easier for a team like LSU to rise that much faster.

I agree. Johnny Jones has done a "Dale Brown" job on LSU basketball. And, that is very, very good. It's not just the coaching results on the court, he has actually gotten the LSU community excited again. I am amazed at what he has done in such a short time. Dale Brown kept suggesting him, and I thought that he might be simply displaying loyality to a former player and assistant coach. Now I feel better about LSU basketball than I have in many years. I think the future is bright.

Jeffry, don't know about the best coaching ever in this state, but I agree with you the difference between this last and the last few is obvious. How many SEC games at this point do you think Trent Johnson would have won here...I say maybe 2. LSU already has 6 wins and is at .500 with guys he didn't even recruit and has to fit them into what he wants to do. A former tuba player just got 13 points against an SEC team...albeit probably the worst in the league. You have a bunch of assets each night including O'Bryant's 8 last night. There was no movement on Johnson's offense which is why it was so bad. LSU passes the ball around a lot and they try to run on every single rebound they get. And of courxe you have already mentioned recruiting. Oh, and BTW, in case you didn't catch this score let me catch you up. Iowa State 87 TCU (w Trent Johnson) 54. The Horned Frogs are 1-11 with old Trentie at the helm. I said at the time that was a horrible hire by both LSU and TCU of Johnson. I was neutral at the time on the Jones hire because I didn't know enough about him. But from what I've seen so far both on and off the court (i.e.recruiting), he has done more coaching in less than a year than Johnson did in 4. For the first time in years, I actually see the LSU players IMPROVING within a season. And you don't see players scrambling to leave the program as they did under Johnson either.

Coach Johnny Jones has done a great job this year - perhaps the best coaching ever to grace the hallowed halls of the PMAC. Dale kept saying we should hire him and he was right. From some instant recruiting success, to motivating Hickey, to teaching Del Piero how to attack the hole, to teaching Johnny O how to score with his back to the basket, to an increasing aggressiveness and across the board and development of a killer instinct, Coach Jones has been fantastic. Keep it up and we will be watching this team beat some teams in March.
