East: Changes may be on horizon for LSU offense

LSU’s holiday-induced delay in finalizing the hiring of Cam Cameron as offensive coordinator allows time to digest the possibility.

Though the Tigers have won 23 games and lost four in the past two seasons, the few losses have highlighted offensive shortcomings.

The historic 13-0 regular season in 2011 ended with a thud as the offense was about as impotent as an offense can be in a 21-0 loss to Alabama for the BCS title.

Each of the three losses last season featured high-profile lapses, though they can’t be blamed entirely on the offense.

The one that was most tied to the offense was the 14-6 loss at Florida in which LSU didn’t get in the end zone, didn’t score in the second half, and basically didn’t do anything with the ball.

Had the offense gotten a late first down against Alabama, it might have been able to run out the clock. But that doesn’t excuse the defense giving up a lickety-split touchdown drive immediately after that. Nor does it excuse an ill-conceived fake field goal in a last-minute 21-17 loss.

Had the offense gotten a late first down against Clemson, it might have been able to run out the clock in the Chick-fil-A Bowl. But that doesn’t excuse the defense giving up the winning field goal drive on which Clemson converted a fourth-and-16 and won 25-24.

It’s easy to zero in on these offensive shortcomings, and it is pretty clear that the defense has outperformed the offense overall.

So the possibility of bringing in someone new, presumably Cameron, to run the offense has generated quite a buzz, even though the hire hasn’t been announced and it’s unclear how it would affect the duties of offensive coordinator Greg Studrawa, who doubles as offensive line coach, and quarterbacks coach Steve Kragthorpe.

Remember that two years ago, Kragthrope’s hiring as coordinator generated a similar buzz before fate intervened. He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s as preseason camp began, necessitating that he scale back his duties, and Studrawa took over as coordinator.

Now it appears that in 2013, the Tigers will have their fourth coordinator in four seasons. The question is whether the offense will look much different. Cameron’s possible hire is intriguing because of his closeness to coach Les Miles. They worked several seasons as assistants at Michigan.

One school of thought is that the offense won’t ever change dramatically under Miles because it’s his offense and any coordinator will do what Miles wants. So the coordinator is almost irrelevant, and hiring a trusted friend as coordinator could reinforce that notion.

On the other hand, if Miles feels compelled to make a change — as he apparently does — he likely thinks a change in approach finally is warranted as well. Otherwise, why make the change?

And who better than a friend to entrust with finally modernizing your offense in a way that’s acceptable to an old-school coach?

The reality won’t be known until the fall, but it’s safe to assume most LSU fans hope the latter proves to be true.

nitwit, I will continue with two more points...thanks. Accusations have been made countless times that Miles favors the upper classmen over the younger players....ask all the juniors and seniors who have never been starters because FR and SO have passed them by to start. I bet those seniors and juniors at LSU disagree that Miles favors them. Also, amazingly LSU played the 2nd most TR FR in the NCAA (15) in 2012 and that is SUPPOSEDLY favoring seniors, huh? Also, some novices to LSU football claim that Miles doesn't make necessary coaching changes. Hmm, I bet that comes as big news to Gary Crowton...Dale Peveto...Doug Mallory...Billy Gonzales...Earl Lane...McCarthy the former WR coach, etc. (all done in the last 3 years or so). Not to mention of course Studrawa who is about to lose his position as OC.

Coach Les Miles has won the National Coach of the Year award in 2011...nitwit and witless have not. Coach Les Miles is the winningest coach in LSU football history by % wins. Nitwit and witless do NOT hold that distinction. Greg Studrawa calls the LSU offensive plays...Coach Les Miles has NEVER been OC and then NEVER called the plays. Coach Les Miles has a distinguished coaching career everywhere he has been. Nitwit and witless have blisters on their rear ends because that is the closest they have come to winning a football game as a coach. Les Miles is a WINNER...nitwit and witless are LOSERS and not even LSU fans!

Witless posted a diarrhea tirade that was nothing more that the brainless nonsense he always posts. And his CLAIMS of being an LSU "alumni" (psst, that is plural DUMMY....are you 2 people?) is of course an UNPROVEN claim just like ITS supposed seats, etc. And once again, you CLAIMED that Miles overruled Studrawa the OC on plays..I challenge you to PROVE that statement. C'mon coward, don't just libel someone...PROVE that Miles calls the plays! And nooooo, I am not related to Les Miles...however, I assume you have only "friends" like nitwit as your associates. No one of any intelligence would want to be around a loser and liar and pathetic individual like yourself! Do the forum a favor...crawl back under the rock you emerged from and take nitwit with you. We now know you don't care for LSU, so there is no reason for you to be here, right? Toolame LOSER!

5) Comment by Milesthebest - 14/02/2013

Nitwit, I have 0 evidence you have "slandered me"...once again, you prove your UTTER STUPIDITY. Slander is verbal...libel is written...thus YOU have just earned your "nitwit" name, STUPID! And once again, I am not going to look up your countless anti-LSU messages or anti-LSU posts...they are obvious for the experienced reader here. And once again, you PROVE my claim of hypocrisy by CLAIMING that IF "earning" is involved according to you, then namecalling doesn't matter. Under your own conditions, then, none of the following is namecalling beause you have "earned it." You are nothing more than a pathetic poser who is NOT an LSU fan whose posts about LSU proves you to be ignorant about college football. And you are a pathological LIAR as I answered SOME of witless ridiculous "points" about Les Miles, but I don't have to justify Miles' confidence...his record, NC, and awards have done that. I suggest you move over to your Toolame forum and stop being a fraud and a poser here,. You are little more than a gutless punk!

Right on Nimby? Milesthebuttkiss has always attacked anyone who criticizes Miles. He call then names, idiots, losers and liars. I have seen him do this countless times to many many writers. Below he accuses me of being a Tulane fan and am not nor have I ever been. He is the one that lies when he claims I said "Miles calls the plays" which I have never said. I have also seen dozens of other times where he does the same thing, accuses people of saying things they never said or suggested. Any point a writer makes that he can't argue with or that is a proven fact, he simply ignores. Just read the post and you will see the same thing. He pretends that Miles is not at fault for anything............LOL. He says I am anti-LSU and nothing could be further from the truth. I am an alumni, and we have had four 50 yard line tickets for over 40 years. My entire family is PRO LSU!! He confuses me saying "Miles makes the ultimate decision on the TYPE of ball they play with "Uh, Mr. Illiterate, that IS calling the play if he makes the ultimate judgment on every play" He sees what he wants to see and spins comments to serve his agenda. Anyone reading the comments can see than as plan as day. Maybe he is Miles wife, that would explain a lot.

Miles , if you have evidence I have slandered you , criticized Les Miles coaching or made any statement as to a lack of discipline please provide such . this newspaper is a public forum where ALL are allowed to express their opinions , hopefully without verbal , personal attack . as Widdy said you cannot stand any counterpoint on the coach , so you insult , not very nice . as far the "Milesthebuttkisser" moniker , you earned it .

8) Comment by Milesthebest - 14/02/2013

BTW, nitwit and witless, since you losers have criticized LSU SUPPOSED lack of discipline in the past with ANY LSU player getting in ANY trouble, I guess you losers are now calling for little Nicky's resignation since 4 Alabama players have been charged with crimes that could result in jail time. little Nicky Saban = lack of discipline coach who has thugs occupying his roster!

9) Comment by Milesthebest - 14/02/2013

Hey nitwit, I notice you didn't address the hypocrisy butn just posted your usual drivel. IF you and witless are even different "people" to begin with, why don't you take your SPAM and TROLLING to your Toolame Green Ripple board. If you aren't an LSU fan, that is fan.....then GTFU the LSU forum, loser! Quit being a coward and flaming everything LSU hiding behind a keyboard!

10) Comment by Milesthebest - 14/02/2013

Hey witless, I called you out on your CLAIM that Les Miles calls the plays and overrules the OC. Then, you tried to backtrack on your statement when you knew you had LIED. You have been anti-LSU on every comment you make here and anti-Miles even though he was coach of the year in 2011 and has the best winning % in LSU history. How is YOUR Toolame green wave doing, you pathetic loser? Only a complete nobody with 0 of a personal life would come on to another team's board and flame and troll like you do. #loser #scumbag #spammer #troll

depends on the 14 year old . many are considerate , well behaved , while some aren't ...

12) Comment by Widdy - 14/02/2013

yeah yeah yeah.......just keep calling everyone names. It sounds like your mommy needs to give you a good spanking Milesthebuttkisser. The only reason I call you that is because I have witnessed dozens and dozens of times how thats the first thing you do when someone says something you dont agree with. You call them names just like a punk kid........grow up and act like a man.

13) Comment by Milesthebest - 13/02/2013

Hey Nimby the HYPOCRITE, does calling someone "a 14 year old kid" qualify as "personal attack"? C'mon nimby, have the guts to answer that question! How about "@Milesthebuttkisser? You truly are a hypocritIcal piece of trash aren't you?

14) Comment by Milesthebest - 13/02/2013

Hey nimby, guess you are in trouble with YOUR LIBEL and TROLLING and SPAMMING then huh? Why don't you take yourself and witless and go back to the Toolame forum, loser!

16) Comment by Milesthebest - 13/02/2013

BTW, @witless, I guess that was Miles and Studrawa's fault on 2nd and 2 vs Clemson near the end of the game when a PERFECT play call was made for a pass to a WIDE OPEN Landry and Mettenberger was so incompetent he couldn't make a short pass to a guy without a defender within 10 yards of him...a pass that ANY HS QB could make. That is an execution issue, dummy....NOT a coaching issue. IF that EASY pass is made, LSU WINS the Clemson game!

17) Comment by Milesthebest - 13/02/2013

@witless quote of the day..." I never said Miles calls the plays, but he makes the ultimate decision on what type of ball they play" Uh, Mr. Illiterate, that IS calling the play if he makes the ultimate judgment on every play. Miles does NOT do that and every LSU beat writer has said he doesn't unless maybe in a timeout situation or trick play. IF you had ever watched the sideline shots during the game when the play is being called, you would see Miles LISTENING to the playcall over the headphones...NOT talking. Anyone but a witless IDIOT would know that means he does NOT make the ultimate decision on 95% of the plays! He doesn't have time to change the plays since most get off with about 3 seconds on the play clock to begin with.

18) Comment by Milesthebest - 13/02/2013

@witless would like to admit that it knows it is a complete loser and football ignorant nobody! Unfortunately, its mommy allows this pathetic NOBODY access to a computer and prove what everyone would guess anyway. IT is a totally incompetent clown who knows nothing about college football in general and LSU football in particular. But hey, IT can't talk green ripple football because of course Toolame has no program worth discussing. I just hope that ITS mother grounds this little putrid NOBODY and doesn't let it SPAM this LSU forum! Rent a brain, dummy...you are in dire need of one!

19) Comment by Milesthebest - 13/02/2013

@witless idiot, once again, Les Miles does NOT call the plays. Only the tinfoil hat, clueless morons like yourself even claims that. And BTW, what Miles' responsibility is since he is the head coach and NOT the OC is to make sure that the OC and other coaches are doing their jobs. That is why Crowton is gone...Mallory and Peveto are gone, Gonzales is gone, McCarthy is gone, and now Studrawa will NOT be OC anymore. That does NOT mean he interferes in their jobs like you claim he does. And BTW, little Nicky didn't know what was going on when he went to halftime against Auburn with 2 timeouts in his pocket and wasted a chance for a TD. The announcers even pointed out HIS POOR time management. So put YOUR trash by the curb, LOSER....you simply are too ignorant to try to make points her. I didn't bother reading the rest of your drivel because you have proven to be a mentally incompetent buffoon. So, here is what you do, DUMMY! Take your Toolame "wisdom" and shove it where the sun don't shine.

20) Comment by Widdy - 13/02/2013

@Milesthebuttkisser....if you dont think LSU play Miles brand of football, then you are the IDIOT. You are so quick to call everyone who doesnt agree with you names, just like a 14 year old kid. Regardless Miles is (suppose) the leader, the field general, the head coach, dont pretend that the poor offenses we have had have nothing to do with him. Saban is a control freak but he seems to demonstrate that he actually knows what happening 99% of the time, not 70% of the time. He can run any part of the game, Miles can not. You know if everyone or most of us on here were wrong, then Miles would be talked about as one of the gretest coaches in college football but he is not, regardless of his record. People realize that the LSU brand and facilities sell itself for the most part. By and large he is laughted at nationally, both by fans and the national media. I guess all these people are idiots and your a genious. And when you talk about Mettenberger, remember he is the guy your hero talked about as being the difference maker. Well I guess Miles missed what was really happening. Good head coaches teach and direct and help minimize their assistants weaknesses and faults. Miles has never been able to do that. And his record for hiring top of the lines coaches is very poor...........basically he has hired one in his entire time at LSU. The bottom line is he runs a simple offensive scheme and tries to over power everyone. There is no imagination or creativity, it is plan and simple and that IS MILES brand of football. I never said Miles calls the plays, but he makes the ultimate decision on what type of ball they play.

21) Comment by Milesthebest - 13/02/2013

Sandy, I guess you forgot the LSU NC year when Miles was the head coach and LSU set a team record in offense huh? The problem on offense is NOT that hard to explain but harder to solve. The problem: LSU hasn't had a decent QB since Matt Flynn which was 5 years ago. IF you don't have a good QB, then you have to have an OC who compensates for that. Neither Crowton nor Studrawa know how to do that. The harder solution: Somehow find a good QB or if you can't, do created running type plays and change your offense substantially to make up for the fact that no one respects your ability to pass. Oh, and I'm 100% for the OC change BTW but let me point out one tidbit to you Alzheimer's sufferers out there. Mettenberger has left a minimum of 12 TDs or so out on the field...I believe he has missed the last 20 long passes to wide open receivers...5 in the A&M game alone and the one of course to Boone in the Clemson game. You should be able to hit over 50% of those...Mettenberger has hit 0% of those. I blame Studrawa for a lot but don't blame him for ZM overthrowing every single deep ball in the last 7 games and also him not being able to hit a short pass to a wide open Landry on 2nd and 2 which would have sealed the win in the Clemson game.

22) Comment by Milesthebest - 13/02/2013

Widdy, or should I call you by the more appropriate name "witless", it is hilarious to see someone try the old SCAM like you just did that "will Miles allow him to coach." Perhaps you are thinking of little Nicky Saban who is the control freak. Only the ignorant like yourself thinks Miles interferes. The playcalling scam has been disproved by countless LSU beat writers at all the outlets who says "Les Miles does NOT call the plays". BTW, for the record, LSU's offense conceptionally is very similar to Alabama's except the talent level is not the same...the OL isn't quite as good. huge difference at QB, and the TE of course has not been very good. But the combination of run and pass is about right...LSU just needs to throw in some misdirection plays, screen passes, etc which Studrawa never wanted to do. As Venable the Clemson DC said, "LSU's idea of a trick play is a play action pass." Anyway, Miles has made mistakes on hires just like every coach does but he corrects them relatively quickly...Crowton - fired...Peveto/Mallory - fired...Gonzales - fired...and now Studrawa as OC - fired. And the Studrawa deal shouldn't have even occured since Kragthorpe was supposed to be the OC. Oh, let me guess...that was Les Miles fault that he got Parkinson's right? You are an IDIOT!

23) Comment by Sandy - 13/02/2013

The offense has been horrible for a long time. Does it really take that long for Miles to figure out there is a problem? His philosophy seems to be to put better athletes on the field and eventually wear the other team down. It works against teams whose athletes whose athletes really are inferior to LSU's, but when you play a team with equivalent talent (Bama, Florida, etc.) you can't wear them down because they are just as good. You have to actually play offense. I will believe he grasps this when I see it.

24) Comment by Widdy - 13/02/2013

Someone with a lot of stroke must have pointed out to Less that he needs an OC. I have no doubt that he has no clue just how bad we need one. Maybe this will make us a batter team. On second thought, it can't hurt the offense. Now the question is will Miles allow him to coach, be creative and develop a modern day offense or will he continue to run the simple and worse yet predictable offense he has since he got here.
