LSU 10, Florida 7: Telling holder Warren Rabb just to tilt the ball back a little, Tommy Davis calmly booted a 36-yard field goal through the uprights in the final three minutes to lift the Tigers to a tense victory over the Gators. LSU moved from No. 3 to No. 1 in the AP poll, a spot the Tigers would hold the rest of the season.
Oct. 2, 1982
LSU 24, Florida 13: The Tigers were a two-touchdown underdog to the No. 4 Gators in Gainesville. That was until Dalton Hilliard took over. The freshman tailback tallied 207 yards total offense and all three LSU touchdowns as the Tigers beat their highest-ranked opponent in 16 years.

LSU 28, Florida 21 : The Tigers were 0-7-1 against No. 1 teams entering this contest, including a 56-13 loss in Gainsville a year earlier. This time, LSU bolted to a 14-0 lead and made it stick as Herb Tyler scored twice and Cedric Donaldson returned an interception 31 yards for a score in the fourth quarter. “Now,” one LSU fan said, “I can die happy.”

A Tiger Stadium record crowd of 92,910 watched a breathless drama unfold between the future and former BCS champions. LSU twice rallied from 10-point deficits, converting five fourth-down attempts before Jacob Hester scored the winning touchdown on a 2-yard plunge with 1:09 remaining.

LSU 33, Florida 29: Facing fourth-and-3 at the Florida 36 down 29-26, the Tigers faked a field goal as holder Derek Helton flipped a pass over his shoulder — on a bounce — to kicker Josh Jasper. Jasper ran 5 yards for a first down, setting up a 3-yard Jarrett Lee to Terrence Toliver touchdown pass three plays later with :06 left.
