Tigers tennis team set for home opener

The LSU men’s tennis team will host Clemson at 1 p.m. Thursday at the W.T. “Dub” Robinson Stadium for its first home match.

LSU (2-1) is coming off a win against No. 25 Minnesota.

“Clemson is a very talented team,” LSU coach Jeff Brown said. “They have added a lot of depth from last year, and we will need to play our best to be successful.”

Clemson is 1-1.

LSU is lead by Tom Knights, who is 2-0 in singles this season. Olivier Borsos, playing the top court, clinched the match against Minnesota. Freshman Chris Simpson is 2-1 and clinched the first dual match win of the year against Rice.

In doubles, Neal Skupski and James Turbervill are undefeated.

Baseball

ST. THOMAS RETIRES MAINIERI’S JERSEY: In Miami Gardens, Fla., St. Thomas University retired the jersey of LSU baseball coach Paul Mainieri on Tuesday night before STU’s season opener against Florida Memorial.

Mainieri, wearing No. 1, coached the St. Thomas baseball team from 1983-88 before moving on to the Air Force Academy, Notre Dame and LSU.

In his six seasons at St. Thomas, Mainieri was 179-121-2 and was the winningest coach in STU history when he left.

Track and field

LIPSEY NAMED PRIMETIME PERFORMER: Charlene Lipsey was named CollegeSoccer360 Primetime performer of the week after her performance at the Razorback Invitational last weekend.

Lipsey won the 800 meters with an indoor personal record of 2 minutes, 3.79 seconds.
