EAST: LSU QB Lee deserves curtain call

As the final act of LSU’s storybook season is about to play out, one of the key players has faded into the background.

While the top-ranked Tigers were putting the final touches on their 42-10 trouncing of Georgia in the Southeastern Conference Championship Game on Saturday in the Georgia Dome, television cameras focused on Jarrett Lee, all dressed out but seemingly with nowhere to go.

Finally, Lee was sent into the game to ignominiously take one snap and kneel down to run out the clock in LSU’s 13th victory in as many games. It’s a bit role Lee has been assigned during the final month of the Tigers’ charge to the BCS National Championship Game on Jan. 9 in New Orleans.

After the game, LSU’s newest born-again quarterback, Jordan Jefferson, and a few teammates were ushered in front of LSU banners to be interviewed by crowds of reporters.

Lee, meanwhile, got dressed quietly at his locker, far from the center stage he occupied for the first two months of his senior season. When Lee did attract questions, they dealt with speculation about his academic standing and his diminished role in the offense. Speaking to reporters for the first time in a month, Lee handled sensitive questions as well as he had since August when he was unexpectedly thrust into the starter’s position after Jefferson was arrested and suspended.

He was happy to be part of such a special team, willing to accept whatever role the coaches assigned him, supportive of Jefferson. Lee said he was confident he would remain academically eligible for the championship game, but that is almost a moot point because Jefferson has reassumed the leadership role on this offense, and barring something unforeseen, Lee’s role will be no more than it has been since Jefferson reclaimed the job in the third quarter of LSU’s 9-6 overtime victory against No. 2 Alabama on Nov. 5.

In the weeks leading up to the national title game, much will be said and written about Jefferson redeeming himself, and rightfully so. It’s a good story, one that is central to the Tigers’ historic run. So, too, is Lee’s own story of redemption, and it shouldn’t be forgotten.

Lee, who stepped in eight days before the season opener and took the reins of an offense that was missing its incumbent quarterback, its second-leading receiver (Russell Shepard, who was ineligible), one of its top offensive linemen (injured Josh Dworaczyk), and was about to play its first game under a hurriedly revamped coaching staff in the wake of offensive coordinator Steve Kragthorpe’s illness.

He helped lead LSU to four wins, three against ranked teams away from home, while Jefferson was gone. Lee started the next five wins, with Jefferson in reserve, before the inevitable change occurred.

As this final act plays out, Lee deserves a curtain call.

“We’re 13-0 because of Jordan,” Shepard said, “and Jarrett Lee.”

Lets see if the Advocate allows this comment. The Advocate seems not to allow any comments online to be posted that disagree with the Advocate's view that Lee should play more. They blocked my last comment for this reason alone, and this is why nobody reads the Advocate or comments on Advocate articles online. The Advocate absurdly removes perfectly decent comments, claiming "violation of terms of use' solely because the comments are at odds with the Advocate's opinion on things. The Advocate... boring and scared, of differing opinions. Regarding Jefferson... Jordan Jefferson is not John Elway or Joe Montana. We get it. But neither is McElroy or McCarron at Bama. All Jefferson does is win. I thought that was kind of the point. Winning. And that is what matters to me and apparently Les Miles, and I have to ask... what causes the vitriol aimed JJ's way, amongst LSU fans, of all people! To answer the question of why Lee didn't play after the Bama debacle. I respectfully suggest that it is a merit based decision. First, Lee was always the back up. I love Jarret Lee and he has contributed as much as any player to LSU's success over the years he has been there. Lee literally saved games by coming in and making plays. Always grateful to Lee for who he is and what he has done for LSU. But when he just lost his way against Bama... that’s just unacceptable. JJ came in the Bama game after Lee nearly gave the game away but for a block in the back by Bama. JJ threw passes and ran the option flawlessly to get LSU into scoring position and LSU won. Now, everyone knew after November 5th, that LSU would likely face Bama again in the BCS NCG... so it was kinda important to have JJ getting all the snaps he can get, to perfect his game play after sitting out while the BR City Police were embarrassing themselves over charging 2 LSU players they couldn’t even convince the grand jury(a police and prosecution puppet) of their own nonsense charges! Bama was always on the horizon and as Lee demonstrated, he wasn’t and isn’t up to playing against Bama’s defense(or in a big pressure game against Bama - for whatever reasons). Finally, whether true or not, there are rumors, reported in the baton rouge newspaper, that very possibly, depending on Lee’s exam grades this week, he might be ruled academically ineligible for the BCS NCG. So this isn’t an episode of Oprah where people’s feelings count for play time. This is serious SEC competitive football. JJ needed to be in full time and he is LSU’s starter. Always has been. JJ gives LSU the best chance - based on the evidence submitted by Lee himself on November 5th, to win the national championship. Questioning Les Miles’ decision on QB play is, well, ridiculous and unwise. There are things going on we certainly may not even know... Les knows what’s best for LSU! Trust in Les!

Where does the racial card play into any of this? This has nothing to do with race so stop trying to turn it into something it's not! In my own opinion, it's about the unfair treatment of Jarrett Lee. I blame Les Miles...not Jordan Jefferson! I wish Les would let both QB's play since they both possess talent! What happened to letting Lee get the ball down the field and Jefferson executing the TD! All Lee gets to do now is take a knee on the last play of the game...that's not right!

Please see bayou boys comments. No one on this site sees anything wrong with those comments? Sad that we have to attack these kids to prove a point. Its not about jl or jj. its about decency. Show some class. Its amazing how we say les miles has disrespected jl without cause(i agree) and we turn around and do the same thing to the other quarterback. Wrong is wrong. Outright hypocrisy. Remember this the same mob that turned on jl 3years ago. Lets say he does not go 8 -0, do we even care about him as a person. I think not! Lie and say you would have cared. Stop the nonsense. If jl were my son i would be sick of les miles. If jj were my son i would be sick of some of the comments written here. There is not one person on earth who can justify les miles not putting lee in the game against georgia. Period. also no one can argue that jl is not the mvp. Period. So lets cheer him on with some class.

Yes, Thank you Les for keeping Jarrett Lee's name and game in front of everyone. When there is talk about the big road games LSU won, who was at the helm at Oregon, at WVa? Jarrett Lee was. His performances were surprising, maybe, and he got the job done. His completion ratio is up in the big leagues. He handled the lead up to Alabama #1 with class and skill. He rushed two passes into coverage, and that cost him. I was certain that Miles would put him in in the 1st half against Georgia, which would have rallied the team. Well, in the BCS championship, I have a premonition: something is going to happen to Jefferson in the title game...maybe a little limp, maybe an interception, something, and Lee is going to come in for a series and the team is going to put a 200% effort into his offense. And some crazy calls will be made...like Honey Badger on an end around, or Russell Shepard and a halfback pass. In the end, Lee will be the man leading the team to bring home the crystal ball to the LSU campus. Those will be the crowning moments of his long and long suffering career at LSU.

@Ivy...I agree. It's not either QB's fault of who is called to play...it's Les Miles' call. I've always been a big fan of Les Miles until his recent shameful treatment of Lee. I really just don't understand it! It's a good thing the fans don't vote on Coach of the Year...I probably would have voted for Nick Satan...and believe me...that's saying a lot!

9) Comment by Ivy - 06/12/2011

1. The letter is about Lee, so why comment on Jefferson? 2. No one is bashing Miles, why not?

10) Comment by byubngl3 - 06/12/2011

It is a real shame the way Lee has been treated. Lee is the reason the Tigers got to 8-0, since Jefferson doesn't know how to conduct himself and got suspended. Lee proved himself and showed the fans and coaches he could run the offense and manage the games. 2 picks and he has been sent to pergatory. You dance with who brung ya. I was not a fan of Lee but he changed my mind with his performance on the field this year. This past Saturday shows how bad our offense is with Jefferson. Yes we scored 42 points but 30yds passing? With this type of one deminsional offense Alabam will eat the Tigers lunch. Take a pick or two the defense will hold up.

11) Comment by KB - 06/12/2011

That's an understatement Sandy! Les Miles' treatment of the two QBs is so baffling!

12) Comment by Sandy - 06/12/2011

The standards are obviously not the same for JJ and JL. JJ makes more mistakes in a half than JL made all year. It was bad enough that miles banished him to the bench without a single meaningful snap since the bama game (thanks for getting us to 8-0 kid, but my favorite is back, so we don't need you anymore), but to put him in the SEC Championship just to kneel the ball on the last play? How humiliating is that?

13) Comment by Duckyluve - 06/12/2011

Jefferson is a clown. He is a decent QB at best. If Lee had been in the last game he would have never been allowed to play the whole first half without completing a pass or getting a first down. Miles would have pulled him after the second or third series. If Lee has such bad grades and doesn't go to class then he shouldn't be allowed to stand on the sidelines in uniform. I personally think that Miles is a Jefferson lover, for some reason that I cannot understand. He is not a very good QB.

14) Comment by KB - 06/12/2011

dude1...please check your fingers on the keyboard before typing...your posts are difficult to read! I think you are misinterpreting most of these comments. I don't see where people are attacking JJ or down-playing most of his playing. I'm seeing that they, and I agree with them, believe Les Miles has treated Jarrett Lee shamefully! The Georgia game he send Lee out for the last "knee"! That's insulting to any LSU fan who happens to be a fan of Jarrett Lee. I don't blame JJ for any of this QB situation...I do think he should stop tooting his own horn because he did not bring LSU back to get the victory in the last game...we were down because he couldn't make the plays in the first half! @Sidwit...I think you should change your name to nitwit. The lyoung man you are referring to as getting stomped and inquiring as to his health...if anyone was a thug it would be him! Check out his background. Being a marine does not make you a man! I believe you are insinuating that JJ did the "stomping"? Nothing has been proven at this point...he is innocent until proven guilty!

Bayou boy. Whats race got to do with it. Also i am not "afro american boy". Secondly i said blame miles. Thirdly in multiple other comments i have said that jl deserves to plau and has been mistreated. Finally, i said that you dont have to tear down one kid to promote anothrr. Not on person complimented jj in these comments after the arkansas game. Is this what we have come to. because one kid is abused by his coach we are justified as a community to abuse another kid. . For all you fact people jj and jl have been a part of a ton of winning efforts and they deserve better. Geaux tigers

If you were being recruited by LSU I would think this would have to give you some pause in your decision making. This whole thing could very well cost LSU some top players if they even think they could be asked to start 8 games, win them all and then be sat down for some other player to come back in and take over. I mean if 8-0 doesn't keep you in the game what does? Les is doing what he thinks is best to maintain that multimillionaire job of his. These players are not employees he will be counting on next year so he could care less.

17) Comment by slye753 - 06/12/2011

if JJ sits on his hump for the first half like he has done in recent games, Sabin will roll over and mash LSU. the BCS game will require four quarters of excellent play. JJ does show flashes of excellence, but rarely. hard to beleive Miles didnot at least try Lee in the first half of the SEC game. they do continue to win with JJ, so............................

18) Comment by LoboBR - 06/12/2011

Jarrett Lee has a group of followers that is amazingly growing in numbers. The one thing I would like to know is if Les MIles has gotten wind of all this. Apparently he hadn't as of Saturday evening. He still shows his disillusioned fascination of only allowing JJ to play and that he has an unexplained reason why he keeps Jarrett on the side. His charade telling the world he felt LSU needed the 2 QB system hasn't come to light in my opinion. I have stated loudly, proudly and strongly, as well as most of y'all, that Jarrett should be recognized as MVP for this team and deservedly so. Even sportscasters and writers are jumping on this bandwagon. Some people, that are in disagreement of this, feel as though we are saying JJ is the one being bashed. Well, in some ways he is, but many of the comments I read want a real justification from Miles himself. Miles is the Coach, I understand that, but we the fans want and deserve the right to know, so that we can hopefully respect his decisions. But, without Miles words of real reasoning we won't and can't let this rest. For those that don't agree, our comments of disagreement does not mean we are Tiger haters. We RESPECT, something Miles needs to be coached about, OUR team and what these players have accomplished and we always CHEER them on to VICTORY. GEAUX TIGERS ALL THE WAY!

Les Miles has shown he is interested only in the big prize..He has slapped JL in his face before the entire country and viewers overseas as well. JL stepped in and carried the load while JJ acted out as if he were some kind of gangster. JJ has also continued to show the kind of immaturity as well as indecisiveness that makes him a second string QB on any other team in the top 10 of college football. JL's 2 interceptions against Alabama were certainly and issue. So was JJ's incompetenace in the first half of the SEC Championship..but Les showed no indication he would take JJ out when he wasn't performing. I'm a lifelong (60 years) LSU Tigers football fan. I am also one of those folks who believes that the college athlete gives his/her all because they love the game..not fo a pay check, though I am sure many are looking down the road at the potential of a pro career. Les Miles should be ashamed of how he is treating a young man who has patiently served his time and delivered when he was called upon..even when that call came at the eleventh hour..

I believe that it is quite obvious that Jarrett Lee is being unfairly treated - by Coach Milles. And to dymond28 & dude1. Its also quite clear to everyone that y'all are racist - as in Afro-black boys, judging from your remarks. And I do hope that Miles listens to some of his TIGER TEAM FANS - you need to play fair on the field, as well as off of it. Good Luck Jarrett!! I hope that you perform well in the Championship game, because with only Jefferson, LSU doesn't stand a snowballs chance in hell of winning. GEAUX TIGERS!!!!

Senior LSU QB Jordan Jefferson is his own worse PR enemy. After skipping curfew, getting into a violent fight at a bar parking lot then kicking a guy in the head ( he could have killed him ) back in August 2011, it is very hard to get behind Jordan Jefferson. He remains stubbornly defiant and refuses to apologies for his actions or even say he is sorry for letting down his team ( remember that he had to miss several weeks of the season for his behavior ) & the LSU community. His ego is so big that he stated on national TV that he put the Tigers on his back and carried them to victory over Alabama. What ??? He needs to look no further than New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees to appreciate the high standard of excellence on the field and esp. off the field that a true leader needs to show at all times. Until Jordan Jefferson shows some heart felt remorse for his criminal behavior, I am going to save my admiration for someone else. Sometimes moral principals are more important than just football games.

dude 1, I don't think Bull360 is a hater, he was stating facts. It's easy to say Lee is MVP, and he is very mature under the circumstances, but what a tough pill to swallow. Just to add to JJ stats, he gained minus 5 yards on 6 carries. So dude 1 your a real tiger fan, you tell us, with JJ's performance this past game, how can Lee not play? Lee has been humiliated to say the least.

24) Comment by dude1 - 05/12/2011

Bull360 your a hater. Without either of these quarterbacks lsu would not be in the position it is in today. You dont have to hate on one qb to promote the greatness of another. Also, after the arkansas game no one commented about how well jj played but quick to through daggers when plays poorly. if there is blame put it on miles ad he is the decision maker. If you don't like whats going on don't watch. I am a real togr tiger fan and I pull for all tigers. Insane to wish one player fails in support of another. Jarred lee is mvp of this team not only for his play in the field, but also for his maturity in facing adversity. He is my hero as we can all learn so much from him.

25) Comment by Sidwit - 05/12/2011

Anybody know how the young man who was stomped into the hospital is doing? Yes LSU handled something, but I wouldn't say it was with class.

26) Comment by bull360 - 05/12/2011

I don't know why Jefferson is starting and playing the whole game. He is and always has been a mediocre QB. The last 2 games he is back to where he his career has been for 4 years. he can' read defenses, his delivery is to slow. In 4 years how many great drives has he lead a great drive to win a game? None. He was getting booed when Lee came in last year at Tennessee. Lee drove the team down for the winning score. Lee won the Florida game. Lee came in and allowed LSU to keep the ball against Bama last year. Lee did not play a good game at Bama. It was a bad game plan. you have to get to the edges when you play Bama. Jefferson, with his slow reads and improvised plays did help win the game. Jefferson was poor against WKU. Lee came in for 1 drive and made it look easy. Against Arkansas Jefferson was getting booed because he could not move the team until the punt return. In the biggest game he went 5 for 13 for 30 yards. 0 first downs in the first half. how terrible is that? Please tell me why we have to put up with this? Lee should be playing the most based on performance. I don't know what Les see's, but we will lose against Bama with Jefferson at QB the whole game and ruin a great season.

I don't think that the fans of the team (and not just individuals) will forget about the story of redemption for both QBs who have been through a lot of highs and lows during their career. Lee, Jefferson, Coach Miles and the other members of the team have all handled distractions with class, and just plugged away with what they know best: to play hard as a team and not let the outside distractions get to them. In a fantasy world, both QBs would get a curtain call. In reality, I'm looking forward to seeing either one, or both, of these QBs play hard for their teammates and put their teammates in the best position to bring back the BCS trophy to BR.

29) Comment by JKIR - 05/12/2011

So proud of ALL the Tigers! Especially the once who have be judged so harshly by people who believe every rumor and are filled with a mindless mob mentality and are filled with hate. I hope they have a great game in January and get a great education. I hope they do not become bitter because of small minded, judgemental people. Thanks to the players, coaches and the staff for all your hard work.

I think all of that grass munching has clouded Les' judgement! LOL

31) Comment by dymond28 - 05/12/2011

You need more than a QB to make a team, Go TEAM! all of you deserve the respect that you are being given and good job to the coaches especially Les Miles for not letting people tell you how to run your team.

32) Comment by KB - 05/12/2011

Hang in there Lee...some of us have not forgotten your important role for the team! You are still no. 1 QB in my book! I think it's disgraceful the way you have been treated, but I admire your support of your fellow QB and teammates! You keep proving over and over again how much class you possess...never compromise that part of yourself for anyone! Geaux Tigers and geaux Lee!

33) Comment by Tigergirl86 - 05/12/2011

Amen Mr. EAST! Thank you for your voice and not letting this story die. I'm so thankful to know that the players credit Jarrett Lee, also. Appreciative Tiger fans would love to see Lee get a redemptive shot against Alabama, especially after witnessing our offensive first half showing on Saturday. Why should one QB get an entire game to settle in when the other only gets minimal? What kind of incredible pressure is that on a kid? Whatever - Hang in there Jarrett! Your day is on the horizon. We have a strong feeling that what we (your supporters) have been saying for the past five games is about to come to fruition . . . Know that we so appreciate you bringing us to this dance!!!
