LSU’s Holman tops All-La. volleyball team

Freshman Briana Holman helped lead LSU back to the NCAA volleyball tournament and her strong play earned her Player of the Year honors on the All-Louisiana Louisiana Sports Writers Association volleyball team announced Saturday.

Holman, one of several young stars on this year’s team, also shared the Freshman of the Year honors with Tea Juric of Tulane.

The Green Wave had three members on the first team and the Coach of the Year selection Sinisa Momic, who led Tulane to the nation’s largest turnaround from 2012 to 2013.

The Advocate’s sports website honored

The Advocate’s website,, was honored by the Associated Press Sports Editors as being one of the nation’s top online sports outlets.

Judges from the organization this week voted The Advocate’s website as one of the nation’s 10 best in the 500,000 to 1.9 million annual visitors category.

The site, overseen by Online Editor Pierce W. Huff, offers video, audio, live chats, blogs and more — in addition to all of the content from The Advocate’s print edition.

Martinez defends title, stops Mathebula

ELCHE, Spain — Kiko Martinez successfully defended his IBF junior featherweight title, stopping Jeffrey Mathebula in the ninth round Saturday night.

Martinez was backed by the home Spanish crowd at Esperanza Lag Pavilion. He attacked relentlessly from the start against Mathebula, a former world champion, until the South African couldn’t continue.
