Northwestern LB Collin Ellis named National Defensive Player of the Week

Northwestern University outside linebacker Collin Ellis, a former Dunham School standout, was selected as the Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week by the Football Writers Association of America.

Ellis returned two interceptions for touchdowns in Northwestern’s 44-30 season-opening victory over California last weekend.

The 6-foot-2, 230-pound junior has been added to the Nagurski Watch List, making him eligible to win Nagurski Trophy given annually to the nation’s top linebacker.

Ellis also was selected as the Big 10 Defensive Player of the Week. He returned one interception 56 yards for a TD and another 40 yards for a score. Ellis finished with four tackles and three pass breakups in what was his first start since 2011.
