Zephyrs get shutout in 12 innings by Reno 2-0

Zephyrs shortstop Nick Green committed a two-out error on pinch-hitter Josh Wilson’s slow ground ball, enabling Ed Easley and Taylor Harbin to score in the top of the 12th inning and giving Reno the victory Saturday at Zephyr Field.

The game was the series opener.

THE ZEPHYRS LOADED THE BASES IN THE BOTTOM OF THE INNING ON A DOUBLE BY GIL VELAZQUEZ, KYLE JENSEN’S WALK AND KYLE SKIPWORTH WAS HIT BY A PITCH FROM RENO CLOSER CHAZ ROE. HOWEVER, WITH TWO OUTS, ROE STRUCK OUT JOE MAHONEY FOR HIS SEVENTH SAVE.

PROSPECT

Reno third baseman Matt Davidson, 22, is rated as the fourth-best prospect in the Arizona Diamondbacks’ organization by Major League Baseball.com.

Chosen in the first round (35th overall) in 2009, he played in the All-Star Futures Game on July 14. In his first year in AAA, Davidson is batting .278, but his power that has him considered as a top prospect. He’d hit 16 home runs and 26 doubles, and has 64 RBIs and 48 runs in 101 games coming into the series at Zephyr Field.

GAME FACE

Zephyrs fans may remember Adcock, today’s starter for Reno.

He has faced the Zephyrs twice this season, while with the Omaha Storm Chasers, and the Z’s won both games at Zephyr Stadium.

ON APRIL 29, ED LUCAS AND BEN LASATER HOMERED IN A THREE-RUN FIRST INNING. ADCOCK ALLOWED 11 HITS AND SIX RUNS, FIVE EARNED, IN 6.1 INNINGS, AS NEW ORLEANS WON 6-3.

Then on May 24, in the completion of a game rained out on May 1, the Zephyrs got to Adcock for five runs, all earned, on seven hits in a 5-3 victory. The results gave Adcock back-to-back losses.

The Kansas City Royals, Omaha’s parent organization, released Adcock on June 12. He was 3-4 with a 7.09 ERA in 10 games, nine of them starts, He was picked up the next day by the Diamondbacks and assigned to Reno.

EXTRA BASES

St. Amant native Reid Brignac, who went 2-for-4 Friday with an RBI, finished the series 7-for-17 (.412) with three RBIs and two runs for Colorado Springs in the just-completed series against the Z’s. … As was the case against Colorado Springs, this is the Zephyrs’ only series this season against Reno, which also plays in the Pacific North Division.
