Iowa Cubs hold off New Orleans Zephyrs

Iowa 4,
Zephyrs 3

DES MOINES, Iowa — Nick Green and Kyle Skipworth belted back-to-back solo home runs in the ninth inning, but the New Orleans Zephyrs’ rally fell short as the Iowa Cubs held on for a 4-3 win Thursday night.

Iowa took advantage of two Zephyrs errors in the second inning to score three unearned runs. Duane Below allowed a two-out walk to Mike Olt, then Jae-Hoon Ha reached on a Gil Velazquez error. Below intentionally walked J.C. Boscan to face the Cubs pitcher Jake Arrieta, who drilled a double off the wall in center field. The throw from Kevin Mattison sailed over the cut-off man for an error to empty the bases.

Arrieta pitched 6.2 innings, allowing one run on four hits and earned his first win at Iowa.

Iowa added a run in the third inning to extend the lead to 4-0.

Below allowed four runs, one earned, on three hits in six innings to take the loss.
