Ryan Desormeaux among USSSA junior golf state title winners

Ryan Desormeaux knocked in an 18-foot putt on the first playoff hole to win the USSSA Junior Golf state championship in the boys 15-18-year-old division at the recent Mizuno Governor’s Games at Le Triomphe Country Club.

Desormeaux, who defeated Jonathan Simon of Breaux Bridge for the title, fired a 69 in the first round. Simon rallied from four strokes back to finish at 143 with Desormeaux to force the playoff. Simon missed an eagle putt on the first playoff hole, and Desormeaux was able to putt in for the win.

Jamison Thomassee of Opelousas (145) finished third.

In the boys 12-14 age group, Charlie Flynn of Alexandria won his first USSSA state championship firing a 147, including a 72 in the second round.

Carlo Carino of Harvey shot a 74 in the second round and finished second with a 156, while Matthew Weber of Scott and Nolan Lambert of Gretna (159) tied for third.

Lafayette’s Lauren Aillet closed out her USSSA career with a second consecutive state championship with a 36-hole total of 161 in the girls 15-18 division.

Hillary Washington of Breaux Bridge finished second (172), while Emily Pellerin of New Iberia (174) wrapped up her USSSA Tour career with a third-place finish.

Aillet and Pellerin will play for UNO.

Baton Rouge’s Riely Heaslip fired a 79 in the second round to win the girls 12-14 age division with a 161. Aoife O’Donovan of Monroe (180) was second, followed by Brooke Tyree of Lake Charles (190).

Alexandria’s Chance Queen fired an 82 to win his first USSSA state title in the boys 9-11 division. Kale Fontenot (90) finished second, followed by Roberto Espinosa of Arnaudville (92) in the 18-hole event.

Cassidy Lambert of Gretna fired a 97 to win the girls 9-11 state title, while Taylor Collins of New Orleans (115) finished second.

League golf

SANTA MARIA WINNERS NAMED: The team of Chuck Ellis and David Melacon scored 232 points to win the LSU flight, while the teams of Colin Wilson and Ronny Bonnecaze and John Corban and David Nix tied for first with 178 points in the Tulane flight during BREC’s Tuesday Golf League action last week at Santa Maria Golf Club.

The teams of Mike Arbour and Byron Miller and Jason Anderson and Chris Lewis tied for second (201 points) in the LSU flight.

Michael Carriere and Lee Lawrence (173 points) finished third in the Tulane flight.

In Wednesday league action at Santa Maria, the team of Mike Roussel and Terrell Bourgeois (255 points) won the LSU flight, followed by Jason Miller and Richard Young (241 points) and Chad Braud and Mike Waguespack (234 points).

Amy Furman and Robert Young (175 points) won the Tulane flight, followed by Charlotte Pugh and David Kennedy (174 points) and Jordan Roussel and Andrew Whall (157 points).


CAPELLO, TEEUWEN WIN FREEDOM RUN: Zach Capello and Rosa Teeuwen were the overall winners of the BASF 4th of July Freedom Mile held in downtown Baton Rouge.

Capello was the male winner in four minutes, 30 seconds, while Teeuwen was the female winner in 5:15

Dave Kneiling (5:30) was the masters male winner, while Kim Dominick (6:11) was the masters female winner.

Kevin Mercil (5:52) was the grandmasters male winner, while Laura Lanier (7:01) was the grandmasters female winner.

J. C. Rawls (5:39) won the BASF Challenge, followed by Troy Turkington (5:45) and Ben Templet (5:51).

Youth softball

007’s U10 TEAM SECOND AT STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: In Alexandria, the 10-and-under 007s softball team finished as the state runner-up for the second year in a row and were the last undefeated team before losing to the Louisiana Rippers 6-5 in the title game.

The 007’s trailed 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning, but Anna Jones walked and Jayda Spillman singled to set up a game-tying triple from Alyssa Romano, who later scored on Kendyl Kerr’s sacrifice bunt.

The Rippers, however, rallied in the bottom of the sixth inning to seal the win in the sixth inning.

The 007’s got solid pitching from Brittany Turner in the tournament, while Payton Granier, Hannah Presley, Romano, Jena Vavasuer and Emma Hutchinson were sound at the plate. Jones, Paige Luquette, Granier, Romano and Presley paced the defense.

The team is coached by BJ Romano, Shane Spillman and Greg Presley.

007S U14 TEAM SECOND AT STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: In Alexandria, the 007’s 14-and-under team advanced to the championship game before falling 5-4 to the Lady Crushers.

Ryann Bizette started the title game for the 007’s, and Renee Firmin worked in relief.

In other action, the 007’s rallied for an 8-5 win in extra innings over the La Rippers 98 team. Trailing 4-1 in the last inning, the 007’s got five straight hits from Taylor Tidwell, Camryn Flanagan, Kennedy Carruth, Brooke Romano and Blayne Pence to tie the game. The 007’s scored four runs in the extra inning to get the win.

The 007’s trailed 1-0 in the last inning of their second bracket game against the Desoto Titans before Flanagan got a hit and later scored on a passed ball. Romano’s RBI single scored Carruth, who walked, to secure a 2-1 win.

In game three, Bizette shut down the Shreveport Boom 3-0, and Pence had an RBI double for the winning margin.

A loss to the Lady Crushers sent the 007’s to the losers bracket, but Bizette pitched well, and Romano had a game-winning sacrifice fly in a 2-1 win over the Boom.
