Castro wins Pelican Point Match Play title

Paul Castro was the overall champion of the MGA Match Play Championship this weekend at Pelican Point Golf Club.

Tony Frederic was the runner-up.

Sam Decoteau finished third in the winners’ bracket, followed by Bryan Haymon and Russell Williams.

Chester Campbell won the consolation bracket.

BREC GOLF LEAGUE WINNERS NAMED: The team of Bobby Allen and Jason Miller shot 33 to win the team low gross best ball in Tuesday’s BREC golf league at Santa Maria Golf Club.

Michael Carriere and Triston Elston (37) finished second.

John Corban and David Nix had the low net best ball, while Charles Breedlove and Jay Baronne (36) finished second.

On Wednesday, Chad Braud and Mike Waguespack (34) had the team low gross best ball, while Mike Roussel and Don Dixon (35) finished second.

The teams of Sheldon Faulk and Paul Gray, and Braud and Waguespack (34) tied for the low net best ball score.

HARTENSTINE WINS SENIOR TOURNAMENT: Ernie Hartenstine shot 3-under-par 69 to win the weekly senior golf tournament at The Oaks at Sherwood.

Johnny Pourciau had a 74 to finish second.

Tommy Nicotri won the low net with a 58, while Bill Alexander was second with a 66.

The tournament is held every Wednesday at 8 a.m. at The Oaks at Sherwood. Registration begins at 7 a.m., and the public is invited to participate.

PASTOR WINS TOURNAMENT TITLE: Mari Pastor shot 133 to win the overall championship of the annual BenGals Ladies Golf Association Handicap Tournament held April 29 and May 15 at the LSU Golf Course.

Pat Morgan (145) won the first flight, followed by Sandy Hill (148) and Michelle Remington-Remo (150).

Emmie Denham (142) won the second flight, followed by Suzie Davis (151) and Janice Ehni (153).

Remington-Remo won closest to the pin, Morgan won straightest drive, and Pastor and Jeanie Gauthier won low putts.

DARTEZ TO PARTICIPATE IN PROGRAM: Catholic High golfer Nicholas Dartez was recently selected to participate in The First Tee Training Program at Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy in Hilton Head, S.C., June 3-9.

Dartez is a member of The First Tee and was nominated by the local chapter. He is one of 52 golfers representing 40 chapters across the United States.

Golfers will receive instruction in full swing, short game, course management, mental preparation, fitness training and college placement services.

Youth soccer

BRSC TEAM WINS TITLE: The Baton Rouge Soccer Club U-15 Boys Red team won the Louisiana State Cup this weekend in Baton Rouge.

Team members include Jackson Anderson, Baker Bradley, Micah Buquoi, Nikolas Carley, Allen Crawford, Sean Crawford, Adam Diez, Grant Fink, Nick Guerico, Nayef Hamideh, Nik Kalaj, Edward Mouk, Alexander Ray, Rafael Reyes, Colin Richard, Brett Ross, Tyler Shadle-Colon, Andrew Turner and Liam Walsh.

The team is coached by Richard Bentley-Smith.

Fitness championship

EBR TEAM WINS STATE TITLE: The East Baton Rouge Schools Fitness team won its fourth consecutive Louisiana Elementary Schools Fitness championship April 28 at LSU’s Bernie Moore Stadium.

It is the district team’s eighth state title in nine years after the team outscored Rapides Parish and Jefferson Parish for the title.

Shania Anthony of Cedarcrest-Southmoor Elementary was named Miss Fitness, while Jaden Jackson of LaSalle Elementary was crowned Mr. Fitness. Other team members are Liaya Palmer of Glen Oaks Park Elementary (second place); Fredrick Hitchens of Glen Oaks Park (fourth place); Caitlin Jacobs (Shenandoah Elementary) and Dennis Sheppard (LaSalle Elementary).

The coaches were Kenneth Jenkins, EBR schools director of student activities, Ron Robertson of Glen Oaks Park Elementary, Marc Luckett of LaSalle Elementary, Courtney Comeaux of Shenandoah Elementary and Carol Revel of Westdale Heights Academic Magnet School.
