Sunday: Zephyrs 8, Bees 6

SALT LAKE CITY — The New Orleans Zephyrs stole a season-high five bases and scored four times in the eighth inning to defeat Salt Lake 8-6 at Smith’s Ballpark. The win snapped a three-game losing streak.

The game was tied at four in the eighth inning with two outs when Josh Rodriguez got a hit for the Zephyrs. Rob Brantly followed with a single, and Danny Black hit a triple down the left-field line to score two runs for a 6-4 lead. Austin Wates drew a walk, and the Zephyrs pulled off the double steal with Wates taking second and Black scoring. Brian Bogusevic then singled to center field to give the Zephyrs an 8-4 lead.

Rett Varner (5-1) earned the win in relief, and Chaz Roe got the final five outs for his 14th save.

Brantly led the team with three hits. Bogusevic added two hits and two RBIs.

NOTES

The Zephyrs improve to 24-11 in series openers. ... The Zephyrs have scored in the first inning in their past five games and are 2-3. For the season. the team is 28-20 when scoring in the first. ... The five stolen bases in the game is a season high, eclipsing the mark of three stolen bases May 24.
