Saints training camp: quick read

1 Saints coach Sean Payton on Thursday said wide receiver Joseph Morgan will be “a go” when training camp practices start Friday at The Greenbrier resort in West Virginia, but the player must be eased back into football. The quicker that transition takes place, the better chances Morgan gives himself at latching on to a wide receiver spot amidst a group that includes Marques Colston, Kenny Stills, Brandin Cooks and Robert Meachem.

2 Payton said Saints tight end Jimmy Graham posted the best results on the team’s strength and conditioning test on Thursday, despite missing offseason workouts and minicamp while negotiating a four-year, $40 million contract extension. While the team knows his physical shape didn’t suffer while he was away, it’s time to get an idea about whether his timing with Saints quarterback Drew Brees hits any bumps; or if that’s as impressive out of the gate as his conditioning test was.

3 The first thing Payton said when asked what he’d focus on as training camp got underway was “the return game.” The Saints expect punt and kickoff return duties will be handled by two different players. In the coming days, expect speedsters like Cooks, Stills and running back Travaris Cadet to be evaluated for those jobs, which of course afford playmakers extra touches.
