Anna Heine, Matthew Jakuback capture titles in BREC Junior golf tourney

Anna Heine repeated as the girls champion, and Matthew Jakuback won the boys title to highlight the final day of BREC’s Baton Rouge Junior Championship.

The 15-year-old Heine shot 5-over-par 77 on Wednesday at BREC’s Webb Park to finish in 156. It was her third junior championship in four years. She is believed to be the only three-time girls champion. Matt Decell won three straight boys titles from 2007-09.

Jakuback won his first boys title by seven strokes. The Loyola-New Orleans signee followed up Tuesday’s 3-under 69 at Santa Maria with a 1-over 73 Wednesday to finish at 142.

“Overall, I played pretty well considering I haven’t been able to practice for a month because I pulled a muscle in my back,” said Heine, a former University High golfer who transferred to St. Joseph’s Academy and will be a sophomore. “My fitness trainer Kolby Tullier really helped me get ready.”

Heine said she hit 25 of 36 greens in regulation and was pleased to hit 11 fairways Wednesday.

“I feel like I’m getting better every year,” Heine said.

Jakuback, a former Catholic High golfer, also was pleased with his effort.

“I was more pleased with my score yesterday,” said Jakuback, who had nine birdies in two days. “I didn’t make mistakes. It was exciting to win. My highest finish before in this tournament was fourth.”

Jakuback said his game has really improved in the past two years. He tied for the high school Metro Meet championship before losing a one-hole playoff to University High’s Trey Winstead.

“The strength of my game is my wedge play,” he said. “Going forward, I want to get better off the tee.”

Former Parkview Baptist golfer Daniel Schroeder finished second for the third time in his career. Schroeder carded 74-75 to finish at 149.

“I played better overall yesterday,” said Schroeder, who had just one birdie Wednesday. “My putts weren’t falling today. This was my last junior event, so it was nice to finish second again.”

Peter Mata, another former Catholic High golfer, finished third with two 77 rounds and a 154 total. Donnie Lacombe (72-82) also carded 154 but finished fourth because of a higher score on the back nine.

Cameron Little (75-75 — 150) won the competitive 14-15 boys division. D.J. Johnson (74-81—155) was second.

Other age group winners were Bryce Trum (172, boys 12-13), Madeline Boudreaux (170, girls 12-13), Ryan Dupuy (75, boys 10-11), Cassidy Lambert (86, girls 10-11), Gabriel Loh (112, boys 7-9) and Ava Heine (113, girls 7-9).

“I think the tournament was a success,” BREC golf director Jack Terry said. “Matthew Jakuback’s 142 score was tremendous. Anna Heine is a consistent player. We have some others in the younger age groups who will be forces in the years to come.”
