SEC media days preview: Team-by-team capsules

SEC East

Florida

In the spotlight: 2:40-5:40 p.m. Monday

Coach (year): Will Muschamp (4th)

Players: Junior QB Jeff Driskel, junior DE Dante Fowler, sophomore CB Vernon Hargreaves III

Hot topic: Muschamp has brought in former Duke offensive coordinator and David Cutcliffe protégé Kurt Roper to turn around a fledgling offense. Muschamp’s seat will cool if Roper can turn UF’s stagnant pro-style unit into a successful spread attack.

Vanderbilt

In the spotlight: 2:40-5:40 p.m. Monday

Coach (year): Derek Mason (1st)

Players: Sophomore DT Adam Butler, junior TE Steven Scheu, junior S Andrew Williamson

Hot topic: If there has ever been pressure to win at Vanderbilt, this is the time. James Franklin left for Penn State after back-to-back nine-win seasons, a school first. Mason, the ex-defensive coordinator at Stanford, has big shoes to fill.

South Carolina

In the spotlight: 9 a.m.-noon Tuesday

Coach (year): Steve Spurrier (10th)

Players: Senior G A.J. Cann, senior DT J.T. Surratt, senior QB Dylan Thompson

Hot topic: The Gamecocks have a lot of replacing to do, including DE Jadeveon Clowney and QB Connor Shaw, but under Spurrier the program is expected to challenge for the SEC East title each year. They’ve finished runner-up the past three.

Tennessee

In the spotlight: 1-4 p.m. Tuesday

Coach (year): Butch Jones (2nd)

Players: Senior LB A.J. Johnson, junior LB Curt Maggitt, junior OL Mack Crowder

Hot topic: There may be no team in the SEC as young and inexperienced. Jones reeled in the No. 7 recruiting class in February, a 34-man group of which a whopping 14 enrolled early and went through spring practice.

Missouri

In the spotlight: 9 a.m.-noon Wednesday

Coach (year): Gary Pinkel (14th)

Players: Junior C Evan Boehm, senior DE Markus Golden, sophomore QB Maty Mauk

Hot topic: The reigning SEC East champ, Missouri losses its top three receivers from a potent offense that rolled to 12 wins. Dorial Green-Beckham, Marcus Lucas and L’Damian Washington had 69 percent of MU’s receiving yards.

Georgia

In the spotlight: 9 a.m.-noon Thursday

Coach (year): Mark Richt (14th)

Players: Senior WR Chris Conley, junior RB Todd Gurley, senior LB Ramik Wilson

Hot topic: For the first time in three years, Georgia enters a season without a solid returner under center. Fifth-year senior Hutson Mason’s four-year wait behind Aaron Murray is over; he’s the favorite to take over.

Kentucky

In the spotlight: noon to 3 p.m. Thursday

Coach (year): Mark Stoops (2nd)

Players: Senior DE Bud Dupree, junior T Jordan Swindle, senior DE Za’Darius Smith

Hot topic: Stoops and Co. landed the best signing class in school history. The 28-member crew is rated in the top 25 by all of the major recruiting services and includes QB Drew Barker, the top player in Kentucky who looks to be the favorite for the starting job.

SEC West

Auburn

In the spotlight: 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Monday

Coach (year): Gus Malzahn (2nd)

Players: Senior C Reese Dismukes, senior QB Nick Marshall, senior DL Gabe Wright

Hot topic: Malzahn’s opening act on the Plains was a smash hit — an SEC championship and runner-up finish nationally. But was it a fluke or the first step to a new SEC dynasty? Malzahn must replace running back Tre Mason and left tackle Greg Robinson.

Mississippi State

In the spotlight: 9 a.m.-noon Tuesday

Coach (year): Dan Mullen (6th)

Players: Senior S Jay Hughes, junior LB Benardrick McKinney, junior QB Dak Prescott

Hot topic: Prescott’s wait behind Tyler Russell is over. The dual-threat QB takes the reins of Mississippi State’s offense. Prescott led the Bulldogs in rushing (829 yards) and passing (1,940) last season.

Texas A&M

In the spotlight: 1-4 p.m. Tuesday

Coach (year): Kevin Sumlin (3rd)

Players: Senior DB Deshazor Everett, junior P Drew Kaser, Punter, senior T Cedric Ogbuehi

Hot topic: Sumlin hasn’t led an A&M offense without Hesiman Trophy winner and speedster Johnny Manziel behind center. That changes this year. Sophomore Kenny Hill and freshman Kyle Allen are the favorites to replace Manziel.

LSU

In the spotlight: 1-4 p.m. Wednesday

Coach (year): Les Miles (10th)

Players: Senior T La’el Collins, senior RB Terrence Magee, senior LB D.J. Welter

Hot topic: The Tigers lost key offensive skill players to eligibility and the NFL draft. Leading WRs Jarvis Landry and Odell Beckham Jr. are gone, and so are running back Jeremy Hill and QB Zach Mettenberger. The new-look offense could be very young.

Arkansas

In the spotlight: 1-4 p.m. Wednesday

Coach (year): Bret Bielema (2nd)

Players: Senior G Brey Cook, senior DE Trey Flowers, senior S Alan Turner

Hot topic: The Razorbacks finished last season on a nine-game skid and failed to win a conference game for the first time since 1942. There was hope at the end: close losses to LSU and Mississippi State. But what does Bielema’s group have in Year 2?

Ole Miss

In the spotlight: 9 a.m.-noon Thursday

Coach (year): Hugh Freeze (3rd)

Players: Junior DE C.J. Johnson, senior S Cody Prewitt, senior QB Bo Wallace

Hot topic: In Year 3 with Freeze, Ole Miss is expected to challenge for a title in an SEC West low on experience at quarterback. The Rebels return 15 players, including Wallace.

Alabama

In the spotlight: noon-3 p.m. Thursday

Coach (year): Nick Saban (eighth)

Players: Junior S Landon Collins, junior WR Amari Cooper, senior WR Christion Jones

Hot topic: Saban made a splash by hiring Lane Kiffin as offensive coordinator. He’ll be in charge of finding someone to replace QB AJ McCarron. The favorite is Florida State transfer Jacob Coker, a Mobile native.
