LSU softball blanked by South Carolina in series finale

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A day after combining for 27 runs and 32 hits in a doubleheader sweep, the LSU softball team struggled and South Carolina surged early to win 8-0 in five innings Sunday afternoon in the teams’ series finale.

After scoring double-digit runs in its previous three Southeastern Conference games, LSU (27-20, 8-10) was held scoreless and to just four hits, snapping the team’s four-game SEC winning streak.

LSU’s Ashley Czechner lasted just one inning, allowing four runs and five hits with two walks to fall to 9-11. In relief, Baylee Corbello pitched 2.1 innings and allowed four runs on five hits and three walks, and Kelsee Selman got the final two outs.

Victoria Williams and Chelsea Hawkins each went 3-for-3 for South Carolina (30-17, 9-12), and Williams had three RBIs. Nickie Blue improved to 16-7, striking out two and walking three.

RBI singles from Hawkins and Olivia Lawrence handed the Gamecocks a 3-0 lead after one inning. Ashlyn Masters doubled, and her sister Lauren singled to put runners at the corners, setting up Hawkins’ hit. Williams loaded the bases with a one-out hit, setting up Lawrence for a two-run single.

The Gamecocks made it 4-0 in the second on Williams’ second single, which scored Ashlyn Masters. Williams struck again in the fourth with a two-run single, scoring Mackenzie Moler and Hawkins. Lawrence then walked, and Kristen Struett singled home a third run. Alaynie Page’s sacrifice fly made it 8-0.

LSU hosts South Alabama at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Tiger Park. The game is scheduled to air on CST.
