California, here comes the Tigers.
LSU will open the 2021 football season against UCLA in the Rose Bowl, the school announced Monday afternoon.
The Bruins will return the trip and play in Tiger Stadium to open the 2024 season. The two will meet at UCLA on Sept. 4, 2021.
LSU is making a push to increase the number of power opponents on its schedule with the new College Football Playoff starting this season. A committee will seed the top four teams for a playoff, based partly on strength of schedule.
“I think strength of schedule will play a big part,” said LSU associate athletic director Verge Ausberry, who handles scheduling for football. “I think you’re going to have to play somebody. I think that committee’s going to sit there and they’re going to evaluate that. An opponent from a BCS conference, if you don’t have those on your schedule, I think you’re going to get penalized for it.
“You look at basketball. They look at RPI,” Ausberry said. “They watch that. You play a BCS teams or two BCS teams, that’s going to go in your favor.”
LSU also announced a home-and-home with Arizona State for 2022-2023, news reported by The Advocate in December.
