Weather postpones some basketball playoff games

At just after 1 p.m. Tuesday, the West Feliciana High boys basketball team pulled out of St. Francisville, bound for Monroe and a Class 3A regional-round playoff game at Richwood High.

WFHS Athletic Director Robb Odom was surprised to hear that his team might be in the minority as Tuesday’s freezing temperatures and rain forced road closures.

“We just got on the road to Monroe,” Odom said. “We’ll see what happens.”

Figuring out the Tuesday playoff schedule for boys teams proved to be a challenge. Several notable north-south games — Parkview Baptist at Bossier in Class 3A, Louisiana New Tech-Plain Dealing at Christian Life in 1A and White Castle at Grambling in 1A — were all postponed until 7 p.m. Wednesday by late Tuesday morning. In Class 3A, Port Barre at Port Allen and Donaldsonville at Northwest also were quickly postponed until 7 p.m. Wednesday.

The LHSAA posted a weather advisory on its website and required teams to submit their plans in writing or via email.

One other north-south boys playoff game was affirmed for Winnfield at Episcopal in Class 2A.

“They left school at around 1 p.m. and planned to go through Natchez,” Episcopal coach Chris Beckman said. “They’re like us and wanted to play (Tuesday) and not Wednesday because it’s tough to turn around from when you play in the quarterfinals on Friday.”

With I-10 closed between Baton Rouge and Lafayette until just after 1:30 p.m., the status of other games remain in doubt with the exception of one. St. Michael at St. Thomas More, a Class 4A game, was reset for 7 p.m. Wednesday just before 1 p.m.

At 1:30 p.m., Acadiana at Scotlandville in Class 5A was postponed until 7 p.m. Wednesday, but another game, Comeaux at McKinley, remained set for 7 p.m. Tuesday. East Jefferson at Plaquemine in Class 4A was confirmed for Tuesday night.

The ability of officials to travel from Opelousas to Plaquemine after the roads re-opened was a key factor.

The latest change came after 2 p.m. Dutchtown at Hammond in Class 5A was postponed until Wednesday at 7 p.m., also out of concern over whether officials would be able to travel to Hammond for the game.

Because of the cold and rainy conditions, changes to the Baton Rouge area’s baseball schedule were not a surprise. By noon, all games on the area’s Tuesday baseball schedule were canceled or postponed.

Only two games, Parkview Baptist at Dutchtown and Zachary at Catholic, have been rescheduled. Both are rescheduled for 4 p.m. Wednesday.

“Most of the games postponed today probably won’t be made up for another week or two,” Baton Capital City Umpires Association Assignment Secretary Al Toups said. “Some of them may not be played at all because they’re nondistrict games.

“A lot of our teams are headed to north Louisiana for tournaments this weekend.

“Once that’s over, and everyone is back in town I’m sure we’ll get some games rescheduled.”
