The Southern men’s and women’s basketball teams have had a lot in common of late.
They both lead the Southwestern Athletic Conference with 4-0 records, both had outstanding defensive efforts in beating Jackson State on Monday, and both have a SWAC player of the week.
The men defeated Jackson State 60-36, and forward Calvin Godfrey was named SWAC men’s player of the week Tuesday.
The women defeated Jackson State 69-59, and although the conference named Grambling’s Joanna Miller as its women’s player of the week, Southern’s Kendra Coleman was recognized by CollegeSportsMadness.com as its weekly standout player in the SWAC.
Godfrey, who won the award for the second consecutive week, had double-doubles in victories against Grambling and Jackson State. The 6-foot-9 junior from Milwaukee had 15 points, 14 rebounds and two blocked shots against Grambling on Saturday, and 14 points and 12 rebounds against Jackson State.
“I think he’s one of the better big men in our league,” Jaguars coach Roman Banks said. “And I think he’s still getting better.”
Coleman, a 5-7 junior from Donaldsonville, scored 28 points to lead the Jaguars to a 100-92 victory over Grambling.
Her numbers were more modest against Jackson State — nine points, three rebounds, two assists and a steal — but she nonetheless helped Southern to an easy victory.
“It was not as smooth as it was against Grambling,” Southern coach Sandy Pugh said. “But she was still effective just being on the floor.”
Both teams play at Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday.
