Saints quarterback Drew Brees had a knee problem and was among seven players who were limited in Wednesday's practice, the team said.
The Saints (10-5) released the injury report after Brees and Payton were available to the media, and no questions were asked about the quarterback's knee. He was seen participating in a portion of practice open to the media, and he was walking around the locker room afterward.
Brees was sacked six times in Sunday's 17-13 loss at Carolina (11-4).
S Rafael Bush (ankle) and LB Keyunta Dawson (calf) practiced in a limited capacity Wednesday after missing the last three and four games, respectively. Also limited were LB Kevin Reddick (shoulder), T Terron Armstead (shoulder), WR Marques Colston (back) and G Jahri Evans (knee).
Like Brees, all of those players were seen participating in the portion of practice open to the media.
TE Josh Hill, who missed the past two games with a hamstring injury, practiced fully on Wednesday. So did RB Pierre Thomas, who was listed with an eye injury.
The Saints' opponents on Sunday, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-11), practiced on Tuesday to get Christmas off. Had they practiced Wednesday, DE Da'Quan Bowers (knee) and LB Dekoda Watson (groin) would've missed work.
S Mark Barron (hamstring), LB Ka'Lial Glaud (knee) and G Davin Joseph (knee) would've been limited. LB Lavonte David (elbow) and DT Akeem Spence (wrist) would've been full. G Carl Nicks, the former Saints player who's been battling a staph infection, is out, the Bucs said.
