Leonard Fournette named top Class 5A offensive player

St. Augustine had a team-high three picks, including Outstanding Offensive player Leonard Fournette, on the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Class 5A All-State football team.

Fournette rushed for 1,802 yards and 18 touchdowns, caught 42 passes for 745 yards and six touchdowns and totaled 3,697 all-purpose yards with 25 scores.

Fournette, a senior running back was joined by teammates junior receiver Stanley Morgan (66 catches, 1,077 yards and 13 touchdowns) and defensive back Jermaine Roberts (six interceptions and 56 tackles).

Making a championship game proved lucrative as three teams totaled six selections and two top honors.

Class 5A champion Acadiana placed two players on the team, including the Oustanding Defensive Player junior defensive back Ronald Broussard. Broussard totaled seven interceptions, 10 pass breakups and 33 tackles.

Acadiana offensive lineman Caden Cunningham was the other Rams’ selection.

Parkway coach David Feaster won Coach of the Year honors after leading the Panthers to their first championship game, including playing four road playoff games because of an LHSAA penalty.

Parkway quarterback Brandon Harris joined his coach after passing for 3,172 yards with 34 touchdowns to 14 interceptions and rushing for another 1,048 yards with 15 touchdowns.

Division I champion Rummel placed junior offensive lineman Ryan Hanley and sophomore defensive lineman Briston Guidry (76 tackles, 20.5 for loss) on the team.

Record-setting senior Barbe receiver Trey Quinn (88 catches, 1,581 yards and 18 touchdowns) joined teammate and athlete selection senior Kennon Fontenot (3,751 passing yards and 34 touchdowns to four interceptions, along with 651 rushing yards and seven touchdowns).

West Jefferson senior receiver Niguel Veal caught 44 passes for 673 yards and 11 touchdowns while also returning three kicks for scores.

The rest of the offensive line includes West Monroe senior Cameron Robinson, Brother Martin’s William Clapp and Dutchtown senior Trey Gallman.

The remaining running backs are John Ehret’s Darrel Williams (2,201 rushing yards and 30 touchdowns) and Catholic-Baton Rouge junior Derrius Guice (1,101 rushing yards with 13 touchdowns and two return touchdowns).

Holy Cross junior kicker Reed Gravolet made 10-of-11 field goals and 19-of-20 extra points. Hahnville senior punter Craig Ford (39.7 average) earned a spot on the team.

Rounding out the defensive line is Airline junior Charlie Matthews (43 tackles, 22 for loss), Covington senior Garrald McDowell (109 tackles, 16 for loss) and East St. John senior Daren Williams (72 tackles, 19 sacks and 30 tackles for loss).

The linebacker quartet includes Destrehan senior Rae Juan Marbley (120 tackles, 16 for loss), Holy Cross senior Zachery Harris (110 tackles), South Lafourche senior Peyton Guidry (111 tackles, 201/2 tackles for loss) and Ouachita senior Brandon Victorian (121 tackles, 12 for loss).

The remaining defensive backs include New Iberia’s Michael Sam and Central senior Donald Lewis (six interceptions, 31 tackles).

At returner, Alexandria Senior High’s D.J. Chark totaled 837 return yards and four scores while adding five other touchdowns and 669 offensive yards.
