Saints coach Sean Payton announced Tuesday that cornerback Jabari Greer is on season-ending injured reserve after tearing the ACL in his left knee Sunday against the 49ers.
Payton confirmed that cornerback Trevin Wade will take Greer’s roster spot.
Payton said Wade, a seventh-round draft pick of the Cleveland Browns last year, got some experience playing as a nickel back before he was waived this offseason.
Greer’s backup is Corey White, who has 14 tackles this season and grabbed his first interception Sunday against the 49ers.
“It’s terrible losing a player like Jabari,” White said. “We asked a lot of him, playing (man-to-man) pretty much the whole game. He’s one of the reasons why we’re third in the league versus the pass. To lose a player like that hurts.”
White, however, said he’s up to the task of filling in for Greer.
“Our coaches always say to be ready,” White said.
White added that replacing Greer on Sunday was an up-and-down experience. On his interception return, he fumbled out of the 49ers end zone. He was flagged for a couple of penalties in pass coverage, and he surrendered a touchdown catch to veteran Anquan Boldin.
“You’re never going to play a perfect game, although it sucked to let your team down in that situation,” White said. “But we won, and that’s all that matters.”
In a separate matter, Payton said linebacker Victor Butler, who tore his ACL in June, returned to practice Tuesday but remains on the Physically Unable to Perform list. Tuesday marked the last day the Saints could let Butler return to practice while keeping him on PUP.
The team has 21 days to decide whether to activate him, place him on season-ending IR or release him.
Saints RB Darren Sproles (knee/ankle) and RG Jahri Evans (ankle) missed practice Tuesday.
Limited were: DE Cameron Jordan (ankle), LG Ben Grubbs (neck), DE Tyrunn Walker (knee), LB Curtis Lofton (hamstring/ankle), TE Jimmy Graham (elbow/foot), CB Chris Carr (hip/back/hamstring), CB Rod Sweeting (hip), S Kenny Vaccaro (concussion), TE Ben Watson (concussion) and DL Akiem Hicks (back).
In Atlanta, TE Tony Gonzalez (toe) and DE Malliciah Goodman (calf) didn’t practice for a second day in a row.
