Player to watch

DB Tyrann Mathieu

Last season’s stats: 57 tackles, 5 forced fumbles, 3 fumble

recoveries, 2 interceptions, 4.5 sacks.

Mathieu can make big plays whether he’s rushing on a blitz or creating turnovers on the back end. He’ll play corner in the base defense, but LSU will utilize five or more DBs for much of the game against Oregon’s many skill players, meaning Mathieu will play more nickel, where he’s freer to roam the field and utilize his exceptional ability to anticipate. In addition to covering the speedy receivers, Mathieu will have a role in stopping QB Darron Thomas and RB LaMichael James. He could also have an impact as a punt returner.

Player to Watch

RB LaMichael James

Last season’s stats: 294-1,731 rushing, 21 TDs, 17-208 receiving, 3 TDs

An accomplished sprinter on the track team, James has a rare blend of speed and power at 5-foot-9 and 195 pounds. Though highlights often show him utilizing his speed on the out-side, he’s equally dangerous breaking tackles between the tackles. He led the nation in rushing last season, getting to 1,000 yards during the Ducks’ seventh game. The team’s only loss came in the BCS title game against Auburn when James was limited to 49 yards on just 13 attempts. He still made an impact by catching two touchdown passes.
