UL-Lafayette (1-2) travels to the University of Akron (1-2) Saturday for a 5 p.m. game. The Cajuns scored the most points in a game since 1943 when they defeated Nicholls State 70-7 at Cajun Field on Saturday night. Akron fell at No. 12 Michigan 28-24 after failing to score on fourth-and-goal in the waning seconds of the game Saturday.
UL-Lafayette coach Mark Hudspeth said the Cajuns were energized to play a home game against Nicholls (1-2), following season-opening losses at Arkansas and Kansas State. ULL rushed for 456 yards and averaged 8.6 yards per carry.
SEVERAL RECORDS WERE SET AS ULL IMPROVED ITS HOME RECORD TO 11-1 UNDER HUDSPETH. THE CAJUNS’ 10 TOUCHDOWNS AGAINST NICHOLLS BROKE A 66-YEAR-OLD RECORD, AND THE 10 EXTRA POINTS KICKED BY STEPHEN BRAUCHLE ALSO SET A SCHOOL RECORD.
Senior middle linebacker Justin Anderson had six tackles against the Colonels despite playing just two-thirds of the game. Anderson also returned an interception 58 yards for a touchdown. Anderson was counseled by Hudspeth on the sideline after Anderson threw the ball into the crowd after the TD and ULL received an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.
RUNNING BACK ELIJAH MCGUIRE BECAME THE FIRST TRUE FRESHMAN SINCE ALONZO HARRIS (2011) TO RUN FOR OVER 100 YARDS IN A GAME. MCGUIRE RAN NINE TIMES FOR 137 YARDS AND THREE TDS.
“We were itching for a win, and we came into the game with a chip on our shoulders.”
Torrey Pierce, ULL running back
“Nice shot in the arm after two tough games on the road.”
KEEP AN EYE ON
The Cajuns defensive line continues to improve after having difficulty in the season opener against Arkansas.
HUDSPETH LIKES THE PROGRESS OF LINEMEN BLAIN WINSTON, MARVIN MARTIN AND MARQUIS WHITE. NOSE TACKLE JUSTIN HAMILTON HAD FOUR TACKLES IN JUST OVER A HALF OF ACTION AGAINST NICHOLLS. WHITE IS ONLY IN HIS THIRD SEASON OF PLAYING FOOTBALL.
The coaching relationships in the Akron game are intriguing.
Both Hudspeth and Akron head coach Terry Bowden were head coaches at Division II North Alabama. Hudspeth coached North Alabama from 2002-08 when his teams were 66-21. Bowden’s North Alabama teams (2009-11) were 29-9. The North Alabama influence is heavy at Akron. Three Bowden assistants — including his brother Jeff — were on Terry Bowden’s staff at North Alabama.
