BYU rallies past LSU soccer team

Fernanda Pina and Summer Clarke each scored goals to give LSU a first-half lead, but No. 6-ranked BYU rallied for a pair of second-half goals in a 4-2 win over the 25th-ranked Tigers Monday night at the LSU Soccer Stadium.

The Tigers (2-1-1) saw their five-game home unbeaten streak snapped and suffered their first defeat to the Cougars (3-0), who evened the series at 1-1-1 all-time.

Pina scored her team-leading third goal of the season in the 21st minute to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.

But the Cougars struck back just over three minutes later, and only 41 seconds coming out of a television timeout, when Colette Jepson-Smith scored to even the score at 1.

Clarke netted her second goal of the season on a left-footed strike inside the right post past a diving BYU goalkeeper Erica Owens for a 2-1 LSU lead at the 32:01 mark.

The Cougars, however, struck quickly in the 34th minute when Ashley Hatch scored to even things up at 2-2 before the halftime break.

The Cougars got goals from Rachel Manning in the 68th minute and Paige Hunt in the 83rd minute to claim a 4-2 victory.

LSU makes its first road trip of the season, competing in the Minnesota Gold Classic. LSU meets Minnesota on Friday night at 7 p.m. before wrapping up the event against 13th-ranked USC on Sunday at 11 a.m.
