Banks guided Southern to a 23-10 record and the SWAC men’s basketball tournament championship, earning the Jaguars a trip to the NCAAs, where they gave top-seeded Gonzaga a scare before losing 64-58. Banks was a finalist for the Ben Jobe Award, which goes to the top minority coach in Division I. Roth’s Rummel football team went 14-0 and won the first state championship in the school’s 49-year history, coming from behind in the fourth quarter to defeat Barbe 35-14 in the title game. In his 18 years at Rummel, Roth, an alumnus of the school, has won 10 district titles and reached the playoffs 17 times. Banks and Roth will be honored at the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fane banquet on Aug. 10 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. The banquet also will honor the newest members of the hall of fame, along with the Corbett Awards, which go to the state’s outstanding college athletes. Those persons will be announced next week.
