Jackson (1-1) gave up a three-run double to Khris Davis with one out, and Cole Garner hit a three-run homer with two outs. The Sounds, who came into the series having won just one of their past 10 games, improved to 5-3 at Zephyr Field this season. MONDAY’S GAME What: Zephyrs at Iowa Cubs. Where: Principal Park, Des Moines, Iowa. When: 7:05 p.m. Probable pitchers: Zephyrs RHP Jared Rogers (4-2, 5.95 ERA) vs. Cubs LHP Chris Rusin (8-7, 3.35). Broadcast: WMTI-FM, 106.1. ON THE MOVE The Miami Marlins traded Zephyrs outfielder Gorkys Hernandez to Kansas City for infielder Alex McClure. Hernandez, 25, was hitting .275 but is known for having hot stretches. Against Nashville, he was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs Friday and 2-for-2 with four RBIs and two runs on a homer and a double Saturday. McClure was taken in the 11th round of the 2010 draft out of Vanderbilt. This season, he has hit .238 with Single-A Wilmington of the Carolina League and .213 with Double-A Northwest Arkansas of the Texas League. STEPPING AWAY Zephyrs reserve catcher Jake Jefferies has retired. The 25-year-old played in just nine games this season, stuck behind starter Kyle Skipworth and backup Koyie Hill, and hadn’t played since June 22. “He got a real job,” manager Ron Hassey said. “He’s going into real estate management back home (in Merced, Calif.). He decided to move on with his life.” Jefferies was in his second season with the Zephyrs and was batting .200. He hit .133 in six games last season after coming to New Orleans from Double-A Jacksonville. He was a third-round pick of the Tampa Bay Rays in 2008. Skipworth is batting just .170. But the Marlins selected him sixth overall in the 2008 draft, he received a $2.6 million signing bonus and the team understandably is committed to him. He has shown potential at times offensively, and Hassey and his pitchers have said Skipworth has made progress calling games. Skipworth is on the Marlins’ 40-man roster. EXTRA BASES The Zephyrs begin an eight-game, eight-day road trip Monday. First they visit Iowa, then American South Division leader Albuquerque before returning home July 30 for four games against Colorado Springs and four against Reno. … Rogers is slated to pitch for the first time since July 10. He had been on the inactive list while attending the wedding of his best friend during the All-Star break.
