West Feliciana High School defensive end Jaylon Ferguson saw exactly what he wanted to see on a Friday visit to Louisiana Tech, so he committed to the Bulldogs.

“I really liked the team and coaches,” he said. “And when I got here, I liked the school just as much, so I feel like this is an opportunity that’s too good for me to pass up.”

As a junior, the 6-foot-5, 220-pound Ferguson finished with 55 tackles, 16 tackles for loss and 13 sacks while playing defensive end and linebacker. His team finished 7-4, losing to North DeSoto in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs.

Ferguson is the sixth 2014 commitment for Louisiana Tech. His other finalists included Central Florida, Houston, Louisiana-Lafayette and Southern Miss. Last week, he participated in a Louisiana Tech camp at Louisiana Leadership Institute, which led to the family visit to the Ruston school.

Ferguson said he has a 3.3 grade point average and already has met the NCAA’s academic qualifying standards, though he plans to take the ACT again. He is considering a major in an agriculture-related field.
