LHSAA announces cities bidding on championship events

The Louisiana High School Athletic Association announced a list of cities vying to host state championship events for baseball, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer and boys and girls tennis for the 2013-14 and 2014-15 school years in a Thursday news release.

The LHSAA’s excutive committee will award the host sites during its annual summer meeting set for June 5-7 in Baton Rouge.

Potential host sites had until May 1 to submit a request for proposal. Baseball and soccer garnered two requests each. Three cities are vying for each of the other sports.

Only one Baton Rouge site, Southern University, submitted a request. SU’s request is for Class 3A-2A baseball only. Sulphur submitted a request to host all seven baseball tourneys.

No college-based sites, including the most recent 5A site, Tulane’s Turchin Stadium, submitted a baseball bid.

City Park in New Orleans submitted requests to host boys and girls soccer at Gormley Stadium and the boys and girls tennis tournaments. The University of New Orleans also is part of the tennis bid with City Park. Shreveport is the other site seeking to host soccer. New Orleans-Gormley was the most recent soccer site.

Monroe/University of Louisiana Monroe and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette also are seeking the tennis tournaments. Monroe was the most recent tennis site.

Lake Charles-based Burton Coliseum is the common denominator in the bids for boys and girls basketball tourneys as the LHSAA moves back to separate boys and girls tournaments after two years of combined events.

While Lake Charles seeks both basketball tourneys, Shreveport (Century-Link Arena) and Ruston (Louisiana Tech) also are seeking the boys tournament. Monroe (ULM) and Hammond (Southeastern Louisiana University) are the others seeking the girls tourney.
