The University of Louisiana at Lafayette softball team advanced to the championship game of the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional with a 3-0 win against LSU on Saturday at Tiger Park.
Second-seeded ULL (45-13) got a long two-run home run from Brianna Cherry in the top of the first inning off Rachele Fico, which was all Ragin’ Cajuns pitcher Jordan Wallace needed to beat No. 1 seed LSU (41-15).
LSU will now have to come back and play at 6 p.m. Saturday against the winner of the 3 p.m. elimination game between third-seeded Northwestern State and No. 4 seed Central Connecticut State.
ULL advanced to the title game at 1 p.m. Sunday, where it will play the survivor of Saturday night’s game between LSU and the Northwestern State-Central Connecticut winner. ULL would need one win to advance to the NCAA super regional round.
Wallace, who was perfect through three innings, struck out 10 LSU batters and allowed just two hits to pitch ULL into the finals. The only hits for the Tigers were a leadoff double by A.J. Andrews in the bottom of the fourth inning and a two-out single by Jacee Blades in the sixth.
Wallace (30-7) also walked one batter and hit one. She got an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Sara Corbello unloaded a solo home run off Fico (24-12) to left field to make it 3-0.
