HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Led by a four-hit day from Tyler Girouard and a trio of pitchers who scattered six hits, the Louisiana-Lafayette baseball team beat Southern Miss 9-1 at Pete Taylor Park on Sunday afternoon.
Girouard was 4-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs for the Ragin’ Cajuns (13-3). Nick Thurman and Jace Conard both were 2-for-5.
The Cajuns broke a scoreless tie in the third inning on a Girouard single and a USM fielding error that resulted in three runs.
Tim Lynch opened the bottom of the fifth with a double, followed by a single by Blake Brown. Mason Robbins then hit a sacrifice fly for the Golden Eagles’ only run.
Lynch and Brown both were 2-3 for USM (7-8).
In the top of the sixth, the Cajuns responded with three straight bunts to extend the lead to 5-1.
Ryan Wilson and Matt Hicks combined for four scoreless innings in relief of winning pitcher Austin Robichaux (2-0), gave up one run on three hits in five innings.
Louisiana Tech 10, Southern 2, 5 innings: Alayna Kipp and Melanie Goff each had three RBIs, and Michelle Jones and Anna Cross combined for a one-hitter to lead Louisiana Tech at Lady Jaguar Field.
The Lady Techsters (12-10) completed a three-game sweep.
Jones (8-5) picked up the win, allowing two runs on one hit and one walk with three strikeouts in four innings.
Cross pitched a scoreless fifth inning, striking out one and walking one.
Amanda Krueger, Kristen Miles and Erin Kipp all drew walks to load the bases with no outs in the top of the first before Southern brought in Kendyl Stevenson to relieve starter Macy Maurer.
Melanie Goff then hit a two-run single to right.
Two outs later, Meghan Knowles hit a two-run single to center.
Knowles later stole home to give Tech a 5-0 lead.
Alayna Kipp (2-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs) hit a home run in the top of the third to put the Techsters up 6-2.
Frandrup was 2-for-4 and Miles 2-for-3.
Danielle Jackson was 1-for-3 for Southern (1-24).
