Scotlandville proved its worth as the No. 2 seed in the Class 5A boys state basketball playoffs Tuesday night, routing visiting St. Paul’s of Covington 102-48 in their bidistrict round opener.
Vincent Sanders scored 22 points to lead five Hornets players in double figures. Brad Bridgewater added 19 points, Damian Jones 18 and Trelun Banks 12 for Scotlandville, which jumped out to a 29-9 first-quarter lead and was never headed.
Scotlandville (29-2), the defending Class 5A state champion, advances to a play No. 15-seeded C.E. Byrd, an 80-65 winner over No. 18 West Jefferson, Friday. St. Paul’s, the No. 31 seed, saw its season end at 16-13. Tyler Schott scored 16 points and Rico Bedford 14 for the Wolves.
CAPTAIN SHREVE 60, WOODLAWN 56: The No. 13-seeded Panthers fell behind 32-18 at halftime and couldn’t claw out of that first-half hole as they fell to visiting Captain Shreve, the No. 20 seed.
The Gators (20-13) advance to play No. 4 East Ascension, which held off No. 29 Covington 47-41.
Woodlawn finished its season at 21-10.
EAST ASCENSION 47, COVINGTON 41: Ja’Cardo Hawkins scored 23 points as No. 4 EA turned back No. 29 Covington. The Spartans improved to 28-3 while Covington finished 15-12.
Matt Dunnaway led the Lions with 14 points.
TARA 57, NEVILLE 55 (OT): Josh Plain had 21 points and Shaquille Reid 19 as the No. 16 Trojans nipped the No. 17 Tigers in overtime. Tara (24-8) plays at No. 1 Peabody, which beat No. 32 Franklin Parish.
PORT ALLEN 67, SOUTH BEAUREGARD 53: Nick Parker had 21 points, Ishmale Lane 11 and Jarius Turner 10 as No. 15 Port Allen pulled away from a tight 27-23 halftime score to turn back No. 18 South Beauregard. Chad Barmore had 19 points and Michael McElhaney 18 in a losing effort for South Beauregard.
PARKVIEW BAPTIST 50, WESTLAKE 39: Reed Vial had 17 points and James Thompson 15 as No. 23 PBS upset No. 10 Westlake on the road. Tyler Johnson led Westlake with 12 points.
BRUSLY 67, BAKER 51: DeMario Jackson and Traven Thibodaux scored 16 points each and Micah Spears added 11 as No. 5 Brusly beat No. 26 Baker. Brusly (23-7) Eric Houlbert led Baker with 14 points, while Rahmil Almond had 11.
GLEN OAKS 69, IOWA 46: Chris Thomas scored 22 points and Jalen Variste 21 as No. 9 Glen Oaks proved too much for No. 24 Iowa. The Panthers (19-11) advance to play at No. 25 West Feliciana.
ST. JAMES 67, NORTH VERMILION 56: Jason Favorite scored 15 points whiled Andre Mitchell and Jared Wiggins had 12 each as No. 14 St. James turned back No. 19 North Vermilion. Mike Bessard led North Vermilion (19-6) with 19 points.
