Houston Baptist scored an 8-0 win over the Jaguars, and McNeese State followed with a 7-1 victory. Southern (0-7) continues tournament play Saturday facing Louisiana Tech at 2:30 p.m. In Friday’s opener, Houston Baptist (1-0) scored five runs in the first inning, keyed by a two-run single from Kate Maddock and a two-run double from Holly Webb. Southern got its only two hits of the game — singles from Whitney King and Alicia Barajas — to go with an error in the third inning but left the bases loaded without scoring. That enabled Houston Baptist (1-0) to pad its lead in the fourth on Kirsten Schwirtlich’s two-run double for a 7-0 lead. Houston Baptist capped the scoring with a run in the fifth. Lori Earl (1-0) threw a complete game with one strikeout and one walk to get the win. Carla Arismendi (0-1) gave up six earned runs on seven hits and walked four in three innings to take the loss for Southern, while Kendyl Stevenson gave up two hits, one earned run, one walk and struck out one in two innings of relief.
