LSU’s Cameron focuses on building offense

New LSU offensive coordinator Cam Cameron

LSU made a move that it expects will upgrade its offense and thereby strengthen its BCS championship prospects when it officially named Cam Cameron as offensive coordinator Friday.

The hiring of Cameron, a former head coach at Indiana and the NFL’s Miami Dolphins, had been anticipated for a week but didn’t get finalized until after the Mardi Gras holiday.

Cameron, who also will be quarterbacks coach, has been close to head coach Les Miles since both were assistants at Michigan in the late 1980s and early ’90s. He agreed to a three-year deal, the details of which have yet to be finalized and are subject to approval by the LSU Board of Supervisors.

The moved triggered a juggling of the offensive staff. Greg Studrawa, who had doubled as coordinator and offensive line coach for the past two seasons, returns to his previous position as line coach. Quarterbacks coach Steve Kragthorpe, who relinquished his coordinator duties to Studrawa after he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, will take on an administrative role in the football department.

Miles called the arrival of Cameron, 52, “a very key hire,” referring to Friday as “a great day for LSU football.” He said he texted Cameron “immediately” after learning of his firing as the Baltimore Ravens’ coordinator Dec. 10, ending a 12-season tenure in the NFL.

“This move is designed to put us in line with a championship,” Miles said. “I wanted to bring in somebody that would make us better. I didn’t want to just bring in a guy. I certainly knew that when Cam became available that there was an outside chance that he might be available to us. What we’ve always wanted to do was be more productive, and I think this was an opportunity for us to increase our productivity by coaching expertise.”

Cameron’s dismissal came a day after Baltimore lost 31-28 in overtime at Washington to drop to 9-4. He was replaced by quarterbacks coach Jim Caldwell. The Ravens lost two of their final three regular-season games, then went 4-0 during the postseason, culminating in a 34-31 victory over San Francisco in Super Bowl XLVII on Feb. 3 in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

Baltimore head coach John Harbaugh praised Cameron for helping put the Ravens in position to make their Super Bowl run, and he and Cameron said they remain close.

LSU lost just four of 27 games while Studrawa was offensive coordinator, but each loss was marked by offensive shortcomings.

The Tigers had fewer than 100 yards in a 21-0 loss to Alabama in the BCS Championship Game after the 2011 season.

In a 14-6 loss at Florida last season, LSU didn’t score a touchdown and was shut out in the second half. An inability to gain a late first down that likely would have allowed the Tigers to run out the clock with the lead marred a last-minute 21-17 loss to Alabama and a last-second 25-24 loss to Clemson in the Chick-fil-A Bowl.

“We’ve been pretty good, minus a minute and a half in two games,” Miles said. “That being said, good’s not good enough, and we want to be a great team. This program has a championship design, and we want to be in the last game.”

In his role as quarterbacks coach, Cameron also will be expected to accelerate the development of senior Zach Mettenberger, who has a strong arm but showed just glimpses last season of the effectiveness that made him highly sought-after coming out of high school and junior college.

Miles said the LSU offense, which ranked 85th in the Football Bowl Subdivision in total yards and 92nd in passing, has “some strengths,” and Cameron will have “an ability to change and restructure.” Cameron said LSU has “a great foundation” and that he doesn’t want to overhaul, just improve.

“I’ve seen a lot of games,” he said. “It’s a great system. I just want to build on it, challenge our guys to get better at some things. And then it’s my job to adapt and adjust and bring my experience, my expectations and blend it in with what we’re doing.”

Cameron said he met with Mettenberger on Thursday.

“The one thing I just wanted to let him know is I’m all ears at this point,” Cameron said. “When a guy gets into his fourth or fifth year, there’s certain things you like to do, certain things know you’re really good at.

“And one of the first things within this system of what we’re doing is just, ‘What does he like most?’ ”

Miles said he asked each assistant coach after the season for his thoughts on how the team could get better. He said Studrawa answered that he could be more effective as offensive line coach if he could spend more time doing that.

“I think Stud in other situations could easily be the offensive coordinator and line coach,” Miles said.

“I think, at this level, there’s a need to have a real hands-on approach with the offensive line. … Stud has always been a very team guy.”

Thank you Coach Les Miles for being the best coach in college football and having standards for players unlike little Nicky at Gump U which basically recruits THUGS to play there for as long as they stay out of prison. Funny how the anti-LSU SPAMMERS here have made a big deal out of the nothing deal with J Jefferson yet haven't commented on the much more serious crimes that 4 Alabama players have been charged with...credit card theft and fraud...stealing a computer...stealing wallets...and I assume yet to come assault on an unconscious person by kicking them in the head. Hey HYPOCRITICAL anti-LSU TROLLS, why don't you comment on little Nicky's COMPLETE LOSS OF CONTROL of that program...now populated by a bunch of CRIMINALS!

Hey witless, Miles was signalling the receiver was down since Ole Miss took the ball away from the WR on that play. Hey Doctor Who, are you still reliving a game that was like 4 years ago or so. You truly are a pathetic nobody with 0 life. Once again, I quit reading your post after a couple of lies, so I didn't read much of that post. Hey witless, Les Miles has been named National Coach of the Year just 2 years ago, while your own claim to fame is being a Toolame TROLL who shows its football ignorance and stupidity with every post. Why don't you crawl back under the rock you emerged from. Every post of yours just PROVE what a complete MORON you are! Learn about college football before trying to post about it. Learn how to evaluate a football coach instead of making a complete FOOL of yourself. Oh, and for God's sake, be man enough to find your own Toolame forum and quit trying to SCAM this board here that you are an LSU fan. Only a mentally incompetent LOSER like yourself would try a con like that.

Psst, 75Saturn, might want to adjust your userid from NOLA.com. You have already been DESTROYED over there as being litlle more than a Toolame SPAMMER and TROLL! You weren't even bright enough to pick an alias over here that might rid you of your some of your ignorant posts from that forum. BTW, according to nitwit, it is OK to call someone a name if it is is true. Sooo, I'm calling you a spineless punk!

What a cop out "MILESTHEBUTTKISSER" Like I pointed out before, when someone points out facts or things you can't defend about LESS you ignore them. Like when ". He signaled for Jeffereson to spike the ball (caught on tape) against Old Miss then denied it to the national media." Another reason he is laughted at by the national media. You can't defend that or spin it. Your hero lied to the entire college football world and it was caught on tape. I didnt expect you to comment because true to form, you ignore anything that sheds a poor light on your hero!!! Your right 75Satum.....he does that to everyone and always had, he even goes as far as to make things up. He has gotten his new nick name since he like dishing it out so much. Like someone else said he has earned it!!!

Personal Attacks? you've got to be kidding me...Milesthebest, little Tommie, or whatever he calls himself from time to time, cannot comment without making personal attacks on anyone who disagrees with him.

Since non-LSU fans keep repeating the same posts under various topics, apparently that is acceptable here so I will do it too. "The great coach Les Miles has done it again. First, he admitted the mistake of putting Peveto/Mallory in charge of the defense after only 1 year and hired the best DC in college football in John Chavez. Then, after incredibly unfortunate circumstance of his OC hire Steve Kragthorpe being diagnosed with Parkinsons, he had no choice but to field promote Studrawa who was NOT hired for the job when he applied for it (Kragthorpe was). A guy who had only been OC once before at lowly Bowling Green simply couldn't cut in the SEC. Congrats to Coach Miles yet again for making the change of coaching when he needed to...Crowton, Mallory, Peveto, Gonzales, Earl Lane, McCarthy, etc.":

Witless again with a diarhhea diatribe with little substance. IT had to back off its initial claim that Les Miles called the plays after I pointed out that FRAUD had been discounted by every LSU beat writer around. Witless clearly is ignorant about Coach Studrawa's background also which has included 0 OC experience before the LSU position other than a position at low level division 1-A school Bowling Green. As far as spqr goes, I point ITS LIES, and laughably witless calls it namecalling. I'm not the one who posted libel about Miles calling plays or restricting the OC like you and spqr have...prove it! YOU made the claim, now PROVE IT! I didn't bother reading the rest of witless incoherent ramblings since of course it has been proven a pathological liar on this board. IT should just crawl back under the rock it emerged from or go back to the Toolame forum! Poor pathetic, football ignorant witless and its comrades nitwit and spqr can't handle when others call them on their lies and lack of football knowledge.

There goes Milesthebuttkisser again. In his true form!! He disagrees with someone so he calls them names, liars and a Tulane fan.............it's almost funny if he wern't so stupid. Your right spqr, Miles we hope will not get involved. That DOES NOT MEAN CALLING PLAYS, THAT MEANS HENDERING CREATIVIY, MOVEMENT AND GETTING AWAY FROM THE TYPICAL SIMPLE MINDED APPROACH. THAT MEANS USING THE TIGHT END FOR SOMETHING OTHER THAN TO COMPLETE THE 11 MAN SQUAD ON OFFENSE. LIKE MAYBE THROWING HIM THE BALL FROM TIME TO TIME. But you never know with Miles, you can't always believe him, he is not always honest. Remember when he signaled for Jeffereson to spike the ball (caught on tape) against Old Miss then denied it to the national media. That happened during one of his many time management issues he has had over the years. I hope this hire works out better than most of Miles hires, Chavez was an excellent hire and probably the RB coach and recruiter also, but other than that, he doesn't have a lot to brag about when it comes to hiring coaches. Also none of them ever seem to be lured away from LSU with head coaching opportunities or promotions. Thats normal at other successful schools but not with coaches working under Miles......Hummm wonder why that is? The only way he seems to know anything about their coaching ability is after things don't work out. Now for you BUTTKISSER, none of this is a lie, I am not a Tulane fan, I AM an LSU fan and graduate but I am not a LESS MILES fan. AND I CERTAINLY AM NOT IN LOVE WITH HIM LIKE YOU ARE.
