State basketball roundup: Southeastern men end skid

HAMMOND — Brandon Fortenberry scored 22 points, and the Southeastern Louisiana men held off Sam Houston State to snap a two-game losing skid with a 69-65 victory Thursday night.

The Lions (6-11, 4-3 Southland Conference) trailed until Dre Evans’ 3-pointer put them ahead 38-37 with 15:50 to play.

Terrance Motley’s jumper put the Bearkats (11-8, 4-3) back ahead, but after Darius Gatson’s basket made it 40-38 for Sam Houston State, Roosevelt Johnson’s layup sparked a 5-0 run to put the Lions ahead for good.

SLU never led by more than seven, and the Bearkats twice cut the lead to two points in the final 30 seconds, the last on Gatson’s free throw with four seconds remaining.

Nicholls State 69, Texas A&M Corpus Christi 62: In Thibodaux, Fred Hunter scored 12 of his 19 points in the first half as Nicholls State pulled away.

Dantrell Thomas added 15 points, and Jeremy Smith had 11 for the Colonels (5-12, 4-3). Johnathan Jordan scored 18 for the Islanders (2-15, 1-6).

Florida International 80, Louisiana-Lafayette 75: In Lafayette, Jerome Frink scored 20 points, and Tymell Murphy added 16 points and 16 rebounds as Florida International (11-8, 6-4 Sun Belt) won its third straight.

Thompson and Elfrid Payton scored 22 points apiece for ULL (7-15, 3-8), which has lost six of seven. Shawn Long added 21 points and 14 rebounds.

Women

Nicholls State 70, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 53: In Thibodaux, Alisha Allen had 20 points, and Emani White added 17 off the bench to lead Nicholls (12-6, 4-3) to a Southland Conference win.

KK Babin added 12 points for Nicholls, which turned 21 steals into 32 points. The Colonels are three wins shy of tying the program record of 15 victories, set last season.

Sam Houston State 58, Southeastern Louisiana 53: In Hammond, the Lady Lions (7-11, 0-7) cut a 15-point deficit to three in the final minute but fell to Southland-leading Sam Houston State (10-9, 6-1).

Aja Gibson led the Lady Lions with 18 points.
