Northwestern State cruises past SLU men

NATCHITOCHES — Shamar Davis finished 5-of-5 from behind the arc and led five Northwestern State players in double figures with 24 points to blow out Southeastern Louisiana 103-68 on Saturday in Southland Conference men’s play.

DeQuan Hicks (16), Jalan West (15), Gary Roberson (12) and James Hulbin (10) each scored in double figures off the bench to help Northwestern State dominate in bench points 63-27.

Northwestern State (11-6, 5-2) shot 66 percent (21-of-32), including 8-of-10 from behind the arc, in the first half.

SLU (5-11, 3-3) shot 35.5 percent (11-for-31) in the second half and trailed by as many as 44 points in the period. Onochie Ochie led the Lions with 18 points.

Northwestern State scored 26 points off 18 Southeastern turnovers.

Stephen F. Austin 72, Nicholls State 49: In Nacogdoches, Texas, Desmond Haymon scored 16 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead Stephen F. Austin to its 11th straight victory.

Taylor Smith added 14 points, six assists, five rebounds and six blocks for the Lumberjacks (16-1, 7-0 Southland), who continued their best start to a season since joining Division I in 1987. Jacob Parker chipped in 13 points.

Fred Hunter led all scorers with 22 points for the Colonels (4-12, 3-3), who were outscored 40-18 in the paint. Nicholls State had six assists and 15 turnovers.

Rice 95, New Orleans 71: In Houston, Tamir Jackson scored 24 points, Julian DeBose added 20 and Rice cruised to a win.

DeBose added eight rebounds and four steals for the Owls (4-13), who shot 61 percent from the field and were 12 of 24 from 3-point range.

Lovell Cook had 18 points, and Rarlensee Nelson chipped in 10 for the Privateers (4-12), who fell to 0-8 on the road.

Women

NORTHWESTERN STATE 64, SLU 55: In Natchitoches, Southeastern Louisiana cut the lead to three in the final minutes but could not fully overcome a 13-point deficit in a loss to Northwestern State in Southland Confrence play at Prather Coliseum.

Brandi Simmons led SLU (7-10, 0-6) with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Aja Gibson added 12 points. Keisha Lee scored 23 points, and Janelle Perez had 18 for the Lady Demons (7-10, 3-4).

Stephen F. Austin 74, Nicholls STATE 63: In Nacogdoches, Texas, Nicholls State shot 63 percent in the first 10 minutes to take a 12-point lead, but Stephen F. Austin ended the first half with a 25-6 run and the Colonels never recovered.

Alisha Allen led Nicholls (11-6, 3-3 Southland) with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Tierany Henderson scored 15 points to lead SFA (8-10, 3-4).

Middle Tennessee 72, ULL 36: In Murfreesboro, Tenn., Icelyn Elie scored 20 points and had nine rebounds, and Middle Tennessee used a 22-3 run to take a 34-10 lead with 4:08 left in the first half.

Lauren March and Kortni Jones each added 13 points for the Blue Raiders (13-5, 8-1 Sun Belt).

Robbie Brown led ULL (7-12, 1-9) with nine points.

BRCC 53, Delgado 42: In Covington, Desiree Savage scored 11 points to lead Baton Rouge Community College to a road win.

Talaih Robertson added eight points for BRCC (12-6, 2-0 Miss-Lou Conference). Jacqueline Breland had 14 to pace Delgado (7-8, 0-3).
