Blame this loss on the LSU offense

Les Miles recently said next year’s LSU offense may be his best yet.

It has about nine months to improve.

A lot.

Many will blame an LSU defense for failing to stop Clemson at critical times in Monday night’s Chick-fil-A Bowl for the 25-24 defeat.

It’s true, LSU surrendered 300-plus yards passing for fourth straight game to end the regular season, including a crucial 26-yard Tajh Boyd-to-DeAndre Hopkins pass on fourth-and-16 on the game’s final drive.

But this one was on the offense.

Coming into this game, Clemson’s defense had allowed 411 yards per game. Its offense was great. One of the best. But defensively, on paper, Clemson looked about as flimsy as a sheet of looseleaf.

LSU got outgained 445-219. LSU got out-first-downed by an astonishing 32-9. LSU got outgained 169-1 in the fourth quarter, managing to run just six offensive plays. Zach Mettenberger was sacked six times, LSU’s patchwork offensive line finally failing to provide him protection in a critical moment.

Such a familiar script for an LSU football game, was it not?

A few big plays by the LSU offense result in a modest amount of scoring, before the gears on that offense grind to a halt.

Many times under Miles, it has been enough for LSU to come away with victory anyway. LSU’s had a lot of games through Miles’ eight years — eight very successful years, let’s remind everyone in meltdown mode out there, with an 85-21 record — when LSU has been outgained and won.

But not this time. Not against an offense this explosive.

It really should not have come down to the final moment for Clemson. Despite trailing until literally the game ended — Chandler Catanzaro’s 37-yard field goal didn’t sail through the uprights until the clock hit zero, or a tick after — but Clemson deserved the victory. It was the orange and purple Tigers who outperformed the purple and gold Tigers for much of the night.

And yet, there was a long time in this game when it appeared LSU would cruise to victory.

Two long touchdown runs by Jeremy Hill at the start of each half helped stake LSU to a 24-13 lead in the third quarter. But when LSU recovered a Clemson fumble at the CU 29 and was forced to settle for a Drew Alleman field goal, it was an ominous note for an LSU offense that would never threaten the end zone again.

LSU didn’t need to score again on its final possession. Up 24-22 with 2:43 left, Mettenberger threw for 8 yards to Kadron Boone. Then he threw one of his few bad passes, missing a wide-open Jarvis Landry in the right flat as he threw on the run, something Mettenberger doesn’t do particularly well. Another incompletion and LSU had to punt back to Clemson, which got the pass it had to have on that fourth-and-16 — maybe the most clutch pass against LSU in a bowl since Drew Tate and Iowa beat LSU on the last play of the 2005 Capital One Bowl.

Ultimately, this game was decided because Clemson forced LSU out of its offensive personality. Twice, Clemson stuffed LSU on short yardage with 10 men in the box. After the first pass to Boone, Miles and offensive coordinator Greg Studrawa didn’t think they could gain 2 yards rushing in two plays. It was like a bluff in poker won by a man holding a pair of 8s.

Win or lose, LSU is still likely to be a top-10 team going into next season. Deservedly so. But Miles, who pulls the strings on this offense, must take a serious look at the direction in which his offense is going, especially in its last three postseason games. He has given over control of his defense to a superb, highly respected coordinator in John Chavis (still superb, despite the late-season inability to stop the pass). All respect to Studrawa, he needs to do the same with the offense, either leaving it all to Studrawa and quarterbacks coach Steve Kragthorpe or find someone he trusts as much as Chavis.

It’s the nature of sports, of course. LSU holds on to win by two, or the Clemson kicker misses, and much is forgiven, if not forgotten. One point can make you a bum or a hero.

LSU should have lost this one. But it could have won, if the offense had been just a little better.

LSU could win enough to be a BCS title contender in 2013, but the offense will have to be better.

Much better.

For someone who claims not to read my "drivel" you sure do seem obsessed with replying to it. You are not the be all, end all of LSU fans. If you can't deal with someone questioning your view of Les (is more) Miles then stay off of these forums and let the adults have an intelligent conversation. You like to give, but you can't take. MTB , I am well aware of the financial independence of LSU's athletic dept. that it is a cash cow for the university , that the majority of coach Miles salary is thru TAF and advertising . if you have evidence I have made statements to the contrary please provide , as well any anti-LSU or coach Miles "spamming' I supposedly said . like many here I've made comments expressing my opinions on the game only to be subjected to vicious , personal attacks . I bow to your superior intellect , enjoy talking to yourself ....

in every family there is at least one MTB , the brother in law , 2nd cousin , that "uncle" you don't know how you're kin to . you cannot talk sports around them because they are sooooo much smarter than anyone . they tend to isolate themselves in front of the TV until the last down of the last game is over , then watch replays . we all enjoy talking sports at our own level . not all wish to carry their sports conversation to extremities . so how about giving us loosers a break . in the meantime learn some manners and develop some people conversation skills .

Although I have disagreed with Attila often in the past, he has every right to comment without molestation by Milesthebest's 4th grade playground insults. Primitive histrionics aside, LSU lost and the world goes on, yet Louisiana's pitiful shortcomings are quite in evidence by MTB's absurd, warped " I know you are, but what am I" mentality. Misery does love company, does it not? However, enough of MTB's bestiality enamored and confused mind, I am off to Miami and more interesting pursuits. Au revoir.

Dawson, all you had to do was to watch the games that Jeremy Hill played the last half of the season in particular. And that 57 yard run was against a base defense. When Hill ran on 3rd and 2 and 3rd and 1, he didn't make it later in the 2nd half. I know you think Clemson is untalented and stupid and that is your right. But they were going to put as many on the LOS to stop the run. LSU fooled them completely and got an 8 yard gain on 1st down. LSU fooled them completely on 2nd down and had a wide open Landry for an EASY first down with a simple pass that ZM apparently can't execute. LSU has more problems that just bad playcalling sometimes. ZM can't execute a play that ANY HS QB can make! BTW, you are quite the HYPOCRITE because LSU did the OPPOSITE of what they did in the Alabama game where the playcalling was criticized then also. "Why didn't LSU pass when the run wasn't going to work. Who cares about the timeouts when you get a first down against Alabama and win the game." ROTFLMAO!! You truly are clueless! You haven't kept up with what Hill does near the end of games...getting worn down. You hypocritically complain when LSU runs safe plays in the Alabama game and yet you turn around and whine about throwing to fool the defense in the Clemson game. I suggest you guy "Football for Dummies" and actually read the book and not just look at the pictures. That 2nd down play was a GREAT play call and WIDE OPEN! LSU simply needs a Q

19) Comment by Dawson - 02/01/2013

Ok Miles, Hill wore down with those 3 carries in the second half. Keep making those excuses. That 57 yard run to start the half probably had him so tired he couldn't carry it again. Maybe he wore down when he torched defenses with long runs in the second half. You say execution, really? So your offensive philosophy is to execute with the 12th best passing game in the SEC when the game is on the line instead of one of the best power running attacks in the nation? You seem to be the one that knows little other than excuses. Let me see go with our weakest part of our game when it is on the line or our strongest? Even if we are stuffed on 2nd and 3rd, Clemson still burns timeouts or the clock runs. Or we do it the way we did and keep let them keep all timeouts, run zero clock and put our completely exhausted defense back out on the field. Hmmm, which wonder which one makes more sense? A great coaching staff is not measured by wins and losses solely but on how many games they win by adjusting and beating teams that are better than you. How many times has that ever happened?

20) Comment by KilgoreTrout - 01/01/2013

"trying to seduce farm animals" obviously meaning a failure to emulate your ancestors' success, thank you for the compliment. At the end of the day, this is a game with a BALL and the outcome of each game is final, like death. Go ahead and mourn.

21) Comment by Milesthebest - 01/01/2013

nimby, that is your choice of attitude which would be understandable IF after stating your belief, you time and time again post about LSU football here. Sooo, once again you prove your hypocrisy. I'm sure your knowledge will carry you far , happy new year ....

23) Comment by Milesthebest - 01/01/2013

To the true LSU fans, next time someone complains about LSU passing the ball near the end of the game when supposedly timeouts were the main concern and NOT the first down in the Clemson game, ask those same people why then did they complain about the Alabama situation where LSU RAN the ball with no chance of getting the first down and getting Alabama to use timeout when they were setting up a failed FG attempt. Soooo, which one is it? Are first downs more important or getting the foe to use timeouts? Hypocrisy of the highest level by supposed LSU fans.

24) Comment by Milesthebest - 01/01/2013

Pretty obvious that some SUPPOSED LSU fans have no clue what the difference is between playcalling and execution. They are NOT the same thing! The 2nd down call near the end of the game worked PERFECTLY. Landry was all alone with no one without 10 yards of him and ZM had an EASY pass which he failed to throw properly. BTW, I assume it was to Landry but there was another WR open 10 yards further downfield near the sideline who was also open. However, the pass was so poorly thrown, I'm not positive it was to Landry but I think it was.

25) Comment by Milesthebest - 01/01/2013

Dawson, don't know if you have been watching the other LSU games where Hill clearly wore down. At this point in his career, he is NOT a 25 carry a game guy....he simply isn't. He has gotten minor injuries trying to do so and he does NOT get stronger the more he carries like some do as you suggested. And his average was grossly exaggerated by a 20 yard run and a 57 yard run. I will remind you yet again that on a 3rd and 2 and a 3rd and 1 earlier in the game, he was stopped wasn't he? Your hypocrisy on the 2nd and 3rd down calls is laughable. For one thing, tell me why it was 2nd and 2 to begin with. It was a PASS wasn't it? Oh, let me guess....your idea of playcalling is to call a run as long as it works...if it doesn't work don't call it. Your ignorance has never reached higher than it is on this subject. Stupidity, ignorance, hypocrisy....pick the right word...you are guilty of all of these and more. Miles is a fantastic head coach...you on the other hand are a bandwagon, flip flopping fan.

26) Comment by Milesthebest - 01/01/2013

nitwit nimby, unlike you, Les Miles doesn't make a big deal out of wins or losses. He actually has a life, unlike you who spends time on an LSU board when you are NOT an LSU fan. So you can stick your insincere concern about Miles' usual behavior of not buying a billboard about wins or losses where the sun don't shine.

27) Comment by Milesthebest - 01/01/2013

Silly for some people to bring up running on 2nd and 2 as the only option. Once again, revisionist history. The ONLY reason it was 2nd and 2 to begin with was a safe, well done 8 yard pass on 1st down. Hate to infuse facts into this issue. Also, the 2nd down play was WIDE OPEN on the pass. All ZM had to do was to throw a simple pass to a wide open Landry and the first down was LSU's. For the Alzheimers patients here, running and getting the yardage was NOT a sure thing by any stretch. Hill had already been stopped on 3rd and 2 and another time 3rd and 1. Getting first downs is MORE important than using timeouts by the opposition. Or perhaps some of you have forgotten the Alabama game. How some have flip flopped. You know the argument then? Why the heck do you run plays that couldn't gain the yards for a first down just to force Alabama to use their timeouts. ROTFLMAO!! Talk about hypocrisy and flip flops. To be honest, I was FOR running the ball on 2nd and 2 but for some to act like the passes were stupid apparently doesn't face reality. The play call was fine and the EASY pass was not executed. I do NOT like Studrawa as OC, but it is utter nonsense to blame him or Les Miles or Santa Claus for the failure on 2nd and 2. It was an EASY play that was not executed.

28) Comment by Dawson - 01/01/2013

Make all of the excuses for coaching decisions that you want to make. Bottom line, Hill 12 carries (only 3 carries in the 2nd half) for 125 yards and Clemson had no answer for him. What does this guy have to do to get 20-25 carries a game? He bailed our pathetic offense out at aTm and against SC and bailed us out against Clemson until the staff refused to give him the ball. The 2nd and 3rd down pass calls where the single worst offensive calls in the history of Miles tenure at LSU and that says something with all of the mismanaged plays that have been bungled in his career here. I was at the game and the Clemson fans were in disbelief that LSU was throwing the ball. Watch the last two minutes of the Rose Bowl tonight and you will see how to run out the clock with 2:00 to go and believe it or not Stanford didn't attempt a pass. Pathetic.

29) Comment by nimby? - 01/01/2013

The talent that's playing in the national champion game for ND at QB, heck even AL QB learned to use his legs this year but that is the very kind of talent that beat LSU lastnight, the kind of talent like Rob Bolden 3rd string QB for LSU. he started 15 games for Penn State, this guy should have seen the field, but you JJ haters for reasons more than wearing #9 ask yourselves what your reason was, got ya'll wish ZM, How do you sit a 15 start QB all year for a guy who couldnt run with Lee Majors legs, you the bionic man. Rob Bolden dualthreat, I'll give u a example T. Boyd I quest ya'll know who that is now, only had 22 yards rushing, but those 22 yards extended multiple drives including the last one. if there was a stat running side to side line he probably rushed for a 100 yards extended the play broke the defense down and they won with a lot less talent . ZM had a -41 yards and the other tigers on the field in those ungly azz orange suits ran at him striaght up the middle time after time . Rob Bolden dualthreat QB 1 more dualthreat example Texas. A&M QB, and Bama not quaranteed to win this game simple because if Everett Golson gets loose like A&M's Johnny Manziel. LSU lets support Johnny Jones I think he's bringing BB back

31) Comment by tball - 01/01/2013

@ comment 41) biglsufan - I couldn't agree more. If LSU could not get a first down with 2 yards to go and 1:50 on the clock?? Then so be it, punt, and Clemson would have One time out left. Where was J. Hill who ran like crazy in the 3rd quarter??? Les would always run through brick walls?? RUN THE BALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

32) Comment by Milesthebest - 01/01/2013

tigertex, I don't know if you root for LSU or not (and no, a userid containing "tiger" isn't worth squat to answer that), but performance in a bowl game has 0 to do with right and wrong. LSU was still screwed and a 40-0 loss wouldn't have changed that...those are two different issues. I do agree that LSU didn't deserve to win the game regardless due to the impotent offense (32 first downs to 9 for example), but your other obtuse point about performance in 1 game trumping an entire season record and thus justifying a particular bowl game is pretty much nonsense!

33) Comment by Milesthebest - 01/01/2013

dualthreat, you lost me on the Kiel comment, but this season DOES confirm Miles/Kragthorpe decision NOT to play Mettenberger last year....remember that one? ZM played this entire season and almost every single play. For whatever reason, he still is not a good SEC starting caliber QB. How many long passes to wide open LSU WRs did he overthrow this season? I believe it was literally 20 at least...5 I know of in the A&M game alone. As far as the complainers go, once again, be careful. There are clearly posters who do NOT want LSU to even win, so don't count those as disgrunted LSU fans. Besides the predictable playcalling, the other troublesome deal is that 3 decently rated QBs have come through the program lately, and neither Jefferson, Lee, nor Mettenberger IMO have improved one iota during their tenure. That has nothing to do with playcalling but simply QBs who are not improving. I blame a lot of things on Studrawa, but that seems to point to Kragthorpe who had 1 year with Lee and Jefferson and now 2 years in the program with ZM (albeit 3rd string last year).

I graduated in 93, so I’ve been through the bad times. I don’t think that means I have to be happy with dumb coaching moves. What is being missed here is that this game puts to rest all the conspiracy theories about the SEC giving LSU a bum deal. Obviously we ended up in exactly the bowl we should have been in. To justify the theories, we needed to not only win but win huge so it’s pretty pointless to argue over how we could have eeked out a close win. This game should have never been close. We are lucky to be in this conference and we are getting a pretty good deal out of it if you ask me.

Important? What? Of course this loss in a game with a ball is important. Without football, Louisiana might be seen as a state of uneducated, ignorant buffoons ripe for profit taking pickings. Its highly important that LSU football wins national championships and/ is highly ranked. After all, Louisiana is last in everything else. Football helps keep Louisiana from being the sad laughingstock of the nation. This loss is serious.

42) Comment by Milesthebest - 01/01/2013

danamangham, I agree of course with the offense impotency you mentioned. I believe this is the 4th year in a row where LSU finished no higher than say 80th in the nation in offense out of what...115 to 120 teams. I can't say I saw a lack of motivation at all or even not being disciplined. To my memory, LSU had 0 illegal procedure penatlies, 1 turnover I think, either 0 or 1 offsides, etc. I saw no real busted coverages either on defense. If ZM could EVER hit a long pass, LSU would have 0 losses. Boone was wide open for a TD and again, overthrown pass. Same with a long pass towards Landry angling towards the sideline for a minimal 25 yard gain. Some of this is bad execution but I still agree with your offensive vanilla comment. I will give a couple of quick examples: 1) where is the crossbuck/counter running play that has worked for about an average of 20 yards per carry the few times it has been called 2) where is ANY end around/reverse or whatever type play? 3) There were a couple of screens but they were thrown in traffic in the middle of the line and did net about 5 yards 4) where is the Utah shuttle pass which would be perfect for a hard rushing, sellout line and is about the safest play in college football since it can't be a fumble (tossed forward)

43) Comment by Milesthebest - 01/01/2013

spqr, guy, we know you are not an LSU fan and you have admitted it before right here, so cut the con job. Second, there is a lot of hypocrisy and one of them is questioning a call on 2nd and 2 when the 1st and 10 play was a very successful 8 yard pass. The second down play was wide open and if you don't have enough confidence in the QB to throw that play, then where is your advocacy of just running a wildcat offense 100%. I have already derided your lack of football knowledge in the past and BTW, even though I would have run it on 2nd and 2, my brother who I was talking to at the time it occured said it was a great call and the fact that Landry was out in the open by 10 yards was proof of that. If you want to criticize the execution, that is fine, but try to show one ounces of intelligence for a change and avoid calling it a bad play call...it was NOT! The goal of a play is to fool the defense and have a very easy play to get a first down. That 2nd down place accomplished both. As much as I can not stand Studrawa, that was NOT one of his bad calls.

44) Comment by Milesthebest - 01/01/2013

LP143, be careful when you assume these are LSU fans. Some of these are fans of other teams who pretend to be LSU fans just so they can try to flame and try to feign some credibility. Everything you said is true and a couple more tidbits. LSU has the 6th longest active bowl streak at 14 straight appearances. The ones longer in no particular order are Georgia, Georgia Tech, Florida, Florida State, and Virginia Tech. Alabama isn't there...Texas isn't there...Oklahoma isn't there...Michigan isn't there... Oregon isn't there...Texas A&M isn't there...Notre Dame isn't there, etc. And Les Miles has the best winning football percentage of any coach in LSU history.

45) Comment by spqr - 01/01/2013

@Milesthebest...no one is looking for a fight. No hypocrisy here concerning late- game play calling. Just a good question being asked by everyone. Now, LSU phoned and they said you can go pick up your check at the front desk.

GEAUX TIGERS!!!! Maybe Miles too for that matter.....

No insider knowledge here, just random observations from a fan & alum born in the year of LSU's first national championship:-) Our defense was supremely intense last night, and those players can hold their heads high in the presence of anybody who ever wore purple and gold. They gave up big fourth quarter drives. . .because they were playing in the 6th or 7th quarter! 100 or 102 defensive snaps--are you kidding me? I can take wins or losses, mistakes and "that's the way the ball bounces," because everybody's human and the other team is trying to win, too. What I can't take is when the Tigers are unmotivated, disorganized, or undisciplined--and as a team, they were none of those things last night! So why am I so furious? Because there's one other thing about Tiger football that can infuriate me, and that is of relatively recent vintage: an utterly predictable, hapless, clueless offense, over and over, year after year, despite having talent that everybody raves about. I understand that some play calls are going to be mistakes or that players will miss a tackle or blow an occasional assignment. What I can't understand is the mindset of sitting on a 7- 10 point lead as though it's 1940 still. The mindset that says we will crush and physically dominate everybody through brute force & without imagination, deception, or misdirection. . .even though it doesn't work. Troy State, anyone? When LSU's offense is even somewhat unpredictable, it spreads out the defense and we beat them to a pulp. We don't need miraculous trick plays--we need an offense that plays to its strengths, but not so conservatively that everybody can see what's coming on 80-90% of the plays!

LP143 - I agree with your assessment of LSU fans, i.e. that the fan base has become spoiled and has unrealistic expectations. The majority of young people today are raised to expect instant gratification - from their cell phones, computers, video games, etc. I still like Les Miles and am glad to see he gets rid of troublemakers, no matter how talented they are. Hopefully Mathieu, Wing, et al will learn that you can't be a druggie sleazeball and succeed in life. In his postgame press conference Miles blamed the offensive line and still seems to stand up for ZM. If the OL is not doing it's job, I hope he addresses the coaching of this part of the time in the off season.

50) Comment by LP143 - 01/01/2013

The stupidity of some LSU fans never ceases to amaze me. I don't know if it is because the fan base has become spoiled and have unrealistic expectations or if it's just ignorance. I suspect that many of the commenters bashing Miles and the team are in the 15 - 25 year old demographic and never experienced the embarrassment of going to Tiger Stadium week after week, year after year, and suffering through bad seasons under a bad program. These are the golden years of LSU football. What Nick Sabin started and Les Miles has been able to sustain over the last 8 years is nothing short of remarkable. Under Miles, LSU has won 80% of its games. Miles has won 93% of his games against non-conference opponents (not including as a win the bowl loss to Penn State that was subsequently revoked). Think we don't play anybody. Show me another team who has played an average of 6 ranked teams each year over the last 8 years (34-17 v. ranked teams - 66%). LSU has finished in the top 5, five times over the last 8 years, won 2 SEC Championships and a National title. Bowl games? How about every year that Miles has been here (5-3 for 62.5%). That's pretty good by any standard. And off the field, Miles has the 2nd highest graduation rate in the SEC (2d only to Vandy). I could talk about the money that LSU football has pumped into academics (especially helpful after our Governor has cut higher education funding year after year), overcoming adversity (Katrina/Rita, Gustav/Ike, Perrilous, Mathieu, injuries, losses of players to academics, etc), I could talk about the economic benefit to the area that results from a successful program, I could talk about major expansions to athletic facilities with non-public funds, and so many other things that have occurred because Les Miles has provided us with a successful football program over 8 straight years. But the sad truth is that if you're too stupid to understand the significance of winning 80% of your games over an 8 year period while being in the SEC West, you wouldn't understand the significance of other factors. I'll conclude by saying that if you don't appreciate the LSU football program and what Les Miles has meant for LSU and Louisiana, get out. We don't want you. Go to Ole Miss, Texas, Michigan, Nebraska, or any of the other 100+ FBS schools who used to be relevant or who never have been. Happy New Year!

HerbF, you mentioned the 13-1 season but the offense was horrible against good defensive teams...Alabama twice, Georgia, etc. But I cut Studrawa some slack because he become OC very late due to the sudden Parkinsons diagnosis of Kragthorpe. But here is a little logic puzzle for you. Why is Studrawa good enough to be OC this year when he wasn't good enough to be hired over Kragthorpe last season. The bottom line is Studrawa's 2011 season should have been the audition for keeping the job much like an interim OC situation. When he failed last year and he failed this year, he shouldn't retain the OC position for 2013. Hire someone like Brian Johnson from Utah.

53) Comment by Milesthebest - 01/01/2013

Meant to say "Muschamp was the DC under Saban" obviously. Regardless, Saban did NOT hire Pelini...Miles did.

54) Comment by HerbF - 01/01/2013

Why would the OC be replaced after a 13-1 season? This year, maybe. The last two bowl games followed the same script: the defense played well, and the offense couldn't move the ball. And, to tell the truth, the offense has had problems all year. I think that Coach Miles will analyze the situation, and if he thinks a change is in order, he will make a change. Though his loyality to his coaches is well known, he has proben to be a realist in this area.

biglsufan, I wouldn't call the QBs "top rated QBs" who came to LSU. I said 4* which is correct using Rivals but to be more specific...ZM was low 4* on Rivals and 4* on Scouts. JJ was low 4* on Rivals and 3* on Scouts. JL was low 4* on Rivals and 4* on Scouts. That is not "top rated QBs" IMO. For the record, you are incorrect...look up the biography on Bo Pelini. "In 2005, Pelini was hired by Louisiana State University Tigers Head Coach Les Miles" Muschamp was the DC under Miles.

57) Comment by biglsufan - 01/01/2013

I do find it interesting how top rated QB's come to LSU and become average at best. Do you see the patern here? I have to agree with Widdy, Miles is totally responsible for his hires. BTW, Pelini was a Saban hire.

My,my 35 (at this count) nearly interminable paragraphs of verbiage. One would think that something important was being debated!

59) Comment by Milesthebest - 01/01/2013

LoboBR, I have no idea why Studrawa has not been replaced as OC? I would probably keep him as OL coach. I will say that Miles has not hesitated in the past of dumping coaches. Peveto/Mallory as DCs lasted 1 year...Crowton had 2 bad years in a row and he was gone...Studrawa has had 2 bad years in a row but then again the 1st year may not count as much since he was "field promoted" for the OC job when Kragthorpe got Parkinsons....Gonzales and McCarthy were both pretty much fired. Cooper is probably about the only coach who left on his own along with Pellini of course. And there was the coach who went up to Memphis to become HC that I think left on his own but he has since been fired by Memphis.

60) Comment by Milesthebest - 01/01/2013

Classof67, I didn't say that ZM or JJ or JL are/were more talented than they showed...just mentioned they were rated highly out of HS. But I will give you their obvious problems. ZM moves SLOWER than the statue of liberty and has 0 pocket presense (stepping up when pressured and sensing pressure). JJ had the worst motion I have ever seen in my life. He literally brought the ball back behind his ear. You want to know why his accuracy was inconsistent...that is it. He is a baseball pitcher type who has a different motion and release point every time he throws a pitch. JL is slow like ZM and simply panics. He had a GREAT Elite 11 camp out of HS...but those are skill camps, NOT game conditions of note. I bet Jarrett Lee was GREAT in practice where he wasn't allowed to be hit, etc. As far as Hilliard goes, there have been hints from writers about him. One is apparently true for sure...his girlfriend had a kid...he became too heavy as he seemed to have gained some weight. As far as the playcalling, it has been bad for 4 years (2 under Studrawa). I do agree the refereeing was not the best, and the announces disputed multiple of those pass interference calls. But the bottom line is, Clemson had 4th and 16 after dominating the game, and all Reid had to do was to look back for the ball and either INT it or knock it away. It almost hit him in the back.

61) Comment by LoboBR - 01/01/2013

@ mtb - Since you have placed Miles on that high pedestal you created (if you indeed are not Miles himself), answer this question - Why hasn't Miles replaced, or asked to have replaced, Studrawa at OC? Your constant repeated dislike for the guy presents this. And second, since you feel that you are so good at evaluating the way football is to be coached and played, when are we gonna get the chance to see you, practice what you preach, as a Head Coach on the field?

62) Comment by Milesthebest - 01/01/2013

Hey nitwit, I addressed most of your "points". I even stated FACTUALLY that your most talent last year comment was PROVEN to be nonsense by the NFL draft and will be again proven to be stupid! As far as coaching in the NFL, that is NOT the desire of all coaches...I mentioned Chavis. Why in the world would Miles want to coach in the NFL when he has a sweet deal at LSU. Rent a brain...you come off like a moron here! And BTW dummy, the NFL doesn't care about who the coach is. They pick the most talented players with NFL upside. The fact that LSU players are overrated by YOU, not Miles or my problem. That is your stupidity! Get off of drugs!

63) Comment by Classof67 - 01/01/2013

Milesthebest - I agree that ZM and JJ were very likely much more talented than they showed under the coaching of the LSU offensive staff. I still think something about this game didn't pass the smell test. The offensive play calling was so obviously bad and the pass interference call when LSU was finally getting an offensive drive going just gave Clemson a field goal. And...where has Kenny Hilliard been? I only saw him on a few plays last night. For a guy that was a real beast earlier in the season and last year, I don't understand...

64) Comment by Widdy - 01/01/2013

Your predictable Milestheworst, you dance around the questions but don't answer any. Regardless of wether or not Miles wants to coach in the NFL, THEY DONT WANT HIM.... WHY?.....thats the question! Keep dancing, you get lots of practice. BTW Alabama will almost always have more NFL draft pics, they are being coached by someone who knows what he is doing.....

65) Comment by Milesthebest - 01/01/2013

concernedcitizen, I agree with you about the players seeming to believe the hype. Just some examples: Mettenberger overrated...Reid horrible overrated (can't cover a receiver to save his life)...Montgomery can't even stay on the field and when he is there, he does little...Simon is earning the name "toast" for all the times he is beaten...etc, etc, etc. I now know what coaches have the FR rule where they keep them away from interviews...I think they should extend it their entire careers. Just wait until the NFL draft. All this SUPPOSED talent has been overrated just like the last few years. Notice the druggies who CLAIM that LSU had the best talent last year like "nitwit". Funny, when the NFL draft came...Alabama had MORE draft choices than LSU and it will happen again in this year's draft. All those SUPPOSED 1st round picks are nonsense. AT MOST, LSU has 1 1st round pick if that. That would be Mingo...NOT Montgomery, NOT Reid, etc.

66) Comment by Milesthebest - 01/01/2013

Attila the board moron is back. I have learned not to even read its drivel because it has proven in the past, it knows nothing about college football or evaluating anything related to it.

67) Comment by Milesthebest - 01/01/2013

nitwit, not every coach wants to coach in pro football so your point is nonsense. Chavis for example has publicly stated he has been offered pro jobs and wants to remain in college. As far as Miles assistants go, you obviously haven't done your homework. Pellini hired away to be HC at Nebraska...Chavis was offered the DC job at Clemson...Ron Cooper was lamented by USC fans when he left there for LSU...Nebraska tried to keep Raymond big time. The ONLY coach I have a problem with is Studrawa as OC, not even so much as OL coach. As far as Crowton goes, I will remind you that LSU WON the NC with Crowton as OC. The other teams' fans were right but as they themselves said, he does fine for a couple of years. 1 was enough to win the NC. BTW, Peveto and Mallory were well established DEFENSIVE coaches...I would NOT have made them DCs but you are lying through your teeth when you said they knew nothing about defense. It is laughable you continue to spout NONSENSE about 2011 LSU team being the best team last year or in history. Psst, rent a brain. Alabama DOMINATED the stats of the 1st game and only lost because they missed 5 FGs. LSU had no starting caliber FBS QB on the team, yet you said they were the best team. Are you on drugs? And once again, Les Miles was National Coach of the Year. You too ignorant about football and stupid in general not to know how to judge teams and coaches, NOT my problem. It is YOURS!

68) Comment by Milesthebest - 01/01/2013

Classof67, I have said for 4 years, I haven't like the OC...first Crowton and then Studrawa and there is factual evidence to support our claims. LSU has finished in the bottom 20% in offense every single year of the last 4. I thought Kragthorpe had a good record of developing QBs, but he had 1 year with Jefferson and Lee and saw little improvement and 1 year (2 years but ZM was 3rd team) with Mettenberger, and quite frankly, he looked as bad in this game as I can remember. Why can the guy NEVER EVER complete a long pass when the WRs are behind everyone? Lee, Jefferson, and Mettenberger were all 4* guys for what that is worth. I saw the "Other" Lee...Zach play in HS, and I KNOW how good he was in HS. Shame that he signed baseball because that guy clearly has more talent as a QB than the other 3 guys combined! If they had screwed him up, I could give you a definitive answer on how the coaching was related to QBs.

69) Comment by Widdy - 01/01/2013

Milestheworst you never talked about why the NFL is so dumb for not gong after Miles. You seem to ignore that point as you always do when someone points out something you can not refute. They have plenty of money since that seems to be an issue with you. Guess its kind of hard the defend that huh? Also since your so great at researching and evaluationg coaching talent, maybe you could help Miles out cause he sure as hell can't determine what a good coach is. If he's so great and the students knew Crowton would be a failure how was all that over looked by the great Miles. Obviously the student boby was be more knowledgable than Miles. High possible!! "You obviously did NOT follow Crowton's career. Unlike YOU, I DO my homework on LSU coaches. You would have seen what I saw. BYU and Oregon fans predicted his LSU career perfectly." WOW dummy, you make my point......I am not paid to evaluate and hire competant coaches you idiot, thats MILES JOB. Again thanks for making my point. BTW obiously his working daily, side by side with the two coaches he promoted to DC's didn't help him determine wether they knew anything about defense either. Just how the hell does that happen since you always have an answer for everything. Thanks for making the same point again with Kragthorpe, Miles must have missed him also. Chavis is his only great hire and he was proven before he came to LSU. tay Charles could have seen that and LSU (not Miles) was willing to pay him the big bucks. Since you adore him so much, why don't you explain whos fault it is that he continues to fail at evaluating his coaching talent and coaching hires. One other thing, you said last years team was not the best in the country....well nationally it was being talked about by professionals that that particular team might be the best in NCAA history. Oh thats righ,t you know more than ALL of those professionals. He was Coach of the year for the 13-0 record not for getting a bunch of terrible players to over achieve. You really are an idiot you know..........LOL

70) Comment by Milesthebest - 01/01/2013

biglsufan, don't know how much of the game you say, but I have news for you. LSU had short yardage situations all game and long and made almost none of them. Hill had 3rd and 2...stopped...Hill had 3rd and 1....stopped. I WOULD have run on 2nd on 2 but nonsense to criticize the play call. They made 8 yards on 1st down PASSING and had a wide open Landry and an EASY pass that ZM couldn't make. Who says that LSU would have made 2 yards in 2 runs? Who says that the RB wouldn't have fumbled the ball. Nothing is 100% certain and taking 2 timeouts with 3 left does NOT win the game. Ask Alabama vs LSU! It is silly to criticize THAT sequence of playcalling when 1st down was a success and 2nd down WAS A SUCCESS except ZM played the game like a HS QB without any college offers.

71) Comment by Attila - 01/01/2013

Maybe Les should hire "Milesthebest" as his assistant head coach. MTB is an addlepate. He has his head so far up Les' patout he can't see the light of day. Miles is LUCKY, plain and simple. He recruits well and then surrounds himself with ineptitude (John Chavis is the exception) and is so "loyal" to these assistants that he refuses to get rid of them. Regardless of what Mr. Know it All, MTB, THINKS he knows Miles could have had the MI job. Blame Skip Bertman and Joe Aleva for having brain farts and giving him raises to keep him. At the very least he should be at AR...but noooo..our clueless AD gives him a cool half mil raise and kisses his behind. Les Miles is nothing more than a mediocre coach who is in over his head. His arrogance and intractable mindset is constantly on display. I can think of no better example than the BCS championship last year. Ole Les got the reds with T-Bob, Shephard, and Lee and regardless of how poorly his thug QB was performing he was going to show them who was boss. Jarret Lee deserved better than that....but the egotistical maniac showed them who was boss didn't he. Don't know if there is any truth to the reports that QB Thug finished 43rd out of 43 QB's at an NFL combine...but I think it is more probable than not. The downhill slide for LSU football started a couple of years ago. Ten wins don't mean squat when all you beat is the Little Sisters of the Poor and other rent-a-wins. Winning ugly time and time again against good competition has become the norm. Don't expect any changes in how the "can't miss" recruits are coached as long as this train wreck of a head coach is still at the throttle. LSU fans has better get accustomed to being second tier. Perhaps the AD's are the ones that need to be fired...who knows, but is patently obvious that something is very wrong at LSU.

72) Comment by concernedcitizen - 01/01/2013

Most of the remarks here seem to be technical and lengthy. I'll just say this: LSU players, in all sports, need to watch more film of opposing teams and practice more instead of acting like and being treated like they rock stars for the cameras. Please keep those grinning reporters away from them so they can focus. I'm just saying...in case no one else has.

73) Comment by Classof67 - 01/01/2013

I feel sorry for the LSU defense which played a phenomenal game in spite of NO help from the offense. Something about this game doesn't add up...ZM had the same "deer in the headlights" confused look as JJ did in last years' BCS championship game. If I didn't know better, it almost looked like this game was a "fix." But, of course, I know that never happens in college football. I still love LM, but I hope he gets a new OC and starts emphasizing the other half of the game or he'll surely lose any hope of getting a quality quarterback recruit, and possibly, the Chief who may tire of carrying the team by himself.

74) Comment by biglsufan - 01/01/2013

Ok Les 'milesisthebest' Miles, just so you learn from your mistakes. As a former coach and player her goes. You have minute fifty left in the game and you're up by 2 and your opponent has ALL 3 timeouts left. It's second and 2 and you are struggling offensively but you have 2 downs to get 2 yards. You want to make Clemson to call time out, run Hill or Ford up the middle. If you get the first, good, if not, do it one more time. The if you get the first, game over. If not, punt. Now Clemson only has ONE time out and you have eliminated quite a bit of Clemson's options on offense. That is of course they live by the "Monkey See, Monkey Do" philosophy. Now, you still might possibly lose The game, but you have increased your percentages of not losing dramatically.

75) Comment by Milesthebest - 01/01/2013

redavaw1, agree with you 100%! I have left out Kragthorpe blame because quite frankly, he has only had ZM for 1 year, but he had JL and JJ for 1 year and I have yet to see ANY QB improve. That is 0 for 3 and you would think that he could teach ZM to step up in the pocket when a center rush is not coming and his awareness is 0. Funny to hear the announcers blame the LSU OL when of the sacks, they pushed the rushers to the outside, and ZM just stood there and didn't step up. Perhaps, he needs to watch Drew Brees who is just as slow as ZM as far as his footwork goes. I think the time management has been good lately myself but the playcalling is horrible. Once again, no misdirection plays, no trick plays, no wildcat tries, etc. I disagree with you on Clemson advantages. Yes, they had a better QB but they also had DBs who knew where the ball was. Reid is a HORRIBLE cover safety (hits well of course). He will NOT be a 1st round choice as some have claimed. I see the guy going in about the 3rd or 4th round. Simon I honestly don't think will be drafted. Remember when everyone was worried about the CB OPPOSITE Simon. If you have noticed, Simon has been the one taken advantage of....Mills for example has had an outstanding season and IMO is a MUCH better corner than Simon has ever dreamed of being. Simon is not quick enough and gets behind the WRs too many times.

76) Comment by redavaw1 - 01/01/2013

I'll be ok with riding out the next few years with Les, BUT someone else has to go. Either the quarterback coach needs to go, or the OC needs to go. Mettenberger isn't aware of his surroundings. He gets sacked way too much! That's a teachable thing, and someone better get to it!! He'll prob lose his starting position next year anyway. THE PLAY CALLING and time management is terrible. The only thing that Clemson had on us was a better quarterback. We beat ourselves!

77) Comment by Milesthebest - 01/01/2013

HerbF, I would have tried runs myself on 2nd and 2, but as you correctly said, Landry was 10 yards open...a high school QB should have completed that pass. IF ZM can't make those EASY passes and he was horrible last night, then LSU needs to find a QB who can. The sacks were not his fault, although apparently "stepping up in the pocket" is foreign to him. But Boone was wide open for a TD and as usual, ZM overthrew him. Same with a long pass towards the sideline to Landry and again an overthrow. I would be prone to guess maybe a receiver is running the route badly but when every receiver does it, it falls on the QB. On the running call ? on 2nd and 2 instead of the pass, I would have done that, but lets remember this, twice before Hill had chances to pick up 3rd and 2 and 3rd and 1 and failed both times. IF ZM makes a simple pass, LSU probably wins the game. IF LSU stops a 4th and 16, LSU DEFINITELY WINS the game. But when you outgained 2 to 1 and 32 to 9 in first downs, LSU didn't deserve to win the game. Reid and Simon simply aren't good cover guys. Even Reid a safety in 3 years should learn how to look back for the ball...didn't on the TD pass and didn't on the 4th and 16 pass.

Widdy, it is widely known what the setup is between Miles and Studrawa and the playcalling. Not only has Miles stated it but also the LSU beat writers have confirmed it.. The general game plan for the offense is gone over and the GENERAL strategy is decided upon...of course subject to change. But Miles is NOT the decisionmaker at critical times. Yes, he can overrule but I doubt he gets that involved. His main involvement is the evaluation of the OC and DC and coaches at the end of the season. And BTW, I NEVER said the cameras were on him all the time, but yes several times during the game they show the coaches between plays and he is NOT talking while the plays are being selected. As far as not being a good field general, that shows your utter stupidity. He was NATIONAL COACH of the YEAR in 2011 and has the best record % in LSU football history. Miles has been offered the Michigan job twice but I have news for you, Potsie. FEW schools can pay what LSU pays...he is like the 4th highest paid coach in college football. Duh!! You obviously did NOT follow Crowton's career. Unlike YOU, I DO my homework on LSU coaches. You would have seen what I saw. BYU and Oregon fans predicted his LSU career perfectly. "He does great the first year or two because he usually has QB established and people in the conference are not used to him. After the QB leaves and the conference adjusts, he can neither develop a new QB NOR does he adjust to the DC adjustments to his calls." So the bottom line is they predicted it perfectly and you know squat about what Crowton is about. Oh, and when he left LSU for Maryland and coached for his buddy Edsel I believe, he got fired after 1 year. You talk about Miles and no other offers, what about Crowton. He is now in the CFL I believe. LSU did NOT have the best team in the country...the reason he was coach of the year is obvious. The people who know football, not you BTW, were amazed that he was 13-0 at one point with 2 QBs who should have been competing at N Dakota St, not Louisiana State for the job. You have just proven by all your silly nonsense, you know squat about college football in general and Crowton and Miles in particular.

The offense was the problem. The defense was on the field far too long. And, last night, the best team won. But, what I really don't understand is why we chose to pass with a 2nd and 2 for a 1st down. We should be able to make two yards in two plays. And, it eats up the clock. With the two passes, the clock stopped each time. If we run the ball and FAIL, we will have eaten enough of the clock that the last second field goal is not a factor. >>>>>>>>>>> Of course, Landry was open, and our qb missed him.

You must be on the side line next to him since his camera time is probably less than 1%. Is that how you know or are you just reading his lips...LOL. I said he gets involved. Like spqr said, he is not a field general and thats what the head guy needs to be. He is a good recruiter but the facilities and Tiger Stadium on Saturday night gets as many recruits as he gets. But hey I guess all these people nation wide are the idiots and you for some unknown reason know everything. I guess the NFL's ownership and management are idiots also. If Miles was considered a good coach they would be after him year in and year out. Buy they are not and will not be. As for Crowton (which I am not a fan) he was know as a wide open guy. When he came to LSU his play calling was vanilla just like everyone working under Miles! Miles is the common denominator. The year we won the NC, was really very lucky. Last year when he did have the best team in the country, Sabin taught everyone watching what great coaching can so with lesser players. Its funny how Sabin is always being talked about as possibly the best coach ever and Miles is never spoken about in that vein. Well I take that back, you know what most people are saying!

biglsufan is quite the history revisionist. SOMEONE deserves credit over the years for all the 4th down conversion, fake punts, best special teams in college football....BY FAR, etc. As far as time management goes, EVERY single coach has those moments....little Nicky in the Auburn game where he went to halftime with a timeout in his pocket and failed to score a TD...the game the other day where the coach didn't call timeout because he thought they had made a 1st down and they ran out of time before halftime, etc, etc, etc. Good news for you is that Miles DOES let the coordinators do their job. NO ONE but the most ignorant claims Miles interferes with Chavis and Miles doesn't call plays either as Studrawa does that. I do say that since Miles stays out of those affairs and is NOT a coordinator, HE IS responsible for the evaluation of them. Obviously Chavis is doing his job, but Studrawa is not. When you finish in the bottom 25% of offenses 4 years in a row (Crowton for 2 who was essentially fired and Studrawa for 2), he needs to get rid of Studrawa at least as OC. He has NOT proven anywhere that he can call plays. As far as your ridiculous claim that Miles doesn't play the best 11, I think you don't know how many are starters. That would be 22 not including special teams but Miles does that anyway. I assume that was a veiled reference to Jarrett "Pick 6" Lee not starting the entire year. Bottom line, Jefferson was the better QB which is why he beat out Lee for 3 straight years. That is NOT saying that Jefferson was a good QB...he was NOT. Just better than Pick 6!

Ok, so we got played by Miles and his agent with the 'Arkansas Connection'. Miles may come across as the village idiot, but he is smart enough to do several things right. First, he has managed to win 10+ games a year on talent, depth and speed, because he sure hasn't proved that he is a good field general. He's also managed to recruit well enough to give us the above. Lastly, he has hired a good agent that just got him a raise and an extension. So, Miles has the Tigers by the wallet and there are 2 options pay out sold the wazoo to buy him out or ride him out. Ride out is what is going to happen so her are my recommendations to Miles: 1. Be a Head Coach and let your Coordinators manage the game. You've proved that your game management skills are suspect at best. 2. Put your ego in the closet. You're a good recruiter, but the letters LSU make your job a lot easier. 3. Play the best 11. You didn't do it last year and it cost you. If you focus on stars behind their name and cars they drive, you are allowing the players egos to develop and their work ethic begins to slip. “You learn far more from negative leadership than from positive leadership. Because you learn how not to do it. And, therefore, you learn how to do it". Norman Schwarzkopf

Les Miles does NOT call the plays and all the clowns who claim he does should actually get some mental health care. The beat writers have proven that as MYTH long ago. Also, when they show the sidelines, Miles is listening for play being called, NOT calling them. Or maybe you buffoons think that he talks without moving his lips at all. What Miles IS responsible for is hiring coordinators. He hired the best one IMO in college football with John Chavis. He then hired Kragthorpe who unfortunately never got to call plays due to Parkinsons onset. I had no huge problem with Studrawa hanging around in 2011 doing the plays since it was too late to hire anyone else. But after 2 seasons it is obvious Studrawa is over his head in the OC position. As Venable the DC at Clemson said, "LSU's idea of a trick play is a play action pass." CORRECT!

spqr continues ITS usual hypocrisy. Hilarious how this novice football fan talks about Jeremy Hill not getting the ball in short yardage situations whne Hill had 2 chances on 3rd and 2's during the game and got stuffed both times. Yet spqr amazingly thinks near the end of the game, that would be more successful. BTW, as I educated widdy, I guess you didn't watch the game. On the 2nd and 2 play, Landry was 10 yards in the open and all ZM had to so was to throw a simple pass and couldn't do it. ZM had a bad game to say the least as he still can't throw the deep ball accurately (ovethrows them all) but he should have been to complete that ball...he didn't. BTW, your accusation of misery is laughable just like your opinion that your comments are worth squat...they aren't. 10-3 is NOT misery. Unfortunately, reading your uneducated, ignorant posts would qualify.

Widdy, it is pretty obvious you are ignorant about LSU and Les Miles. First, he DID make a mistake on the dual coordinator situation just like EVERY coach makes mistakes. You know how long that failed experiement lasted? 1 year. Then he hires IMO th BEST DC in college football....John Chavis. BTW, hope you have a good supply of tin foil hats because your Crowton allegation and Miles interference in his playcalling is utter nonsense. Was Miles at Oregon when Crowton ended up failing there? Was Miles at Maryland in 2011 when Crowton was again the OC there and he was fired after 1 season. Miles does NOT call the plays and only the people who ae conspiracy nuts or don't keep up with LSU football think he does. Miles has been offered the Michigan job twice, oh and BTW, he was National Coach of the Year in 2011. Soooo, thanks but no thanks on a buffoon like you giving an appraisal of Miles when he get voted coach of the year and you of course prove yourself ignorant about who calls the plays at LSU. I do agree with 2nd and 2 calls should be been runs but while you and I criticize that sequence, were you just as critical when Studrawa called the unexpected pass play on 1st down and they picked up 8 yards. Oh, and I guess you didn't watch the game, but on 2nd and 2, ZM had Landry out in the flat for an EASY 1st down and he couldn't throw a SIMPLE pass to the guy...or maybe he was throwing to the guy 10 yards further down the field who was also open. The bottom line is you are either NOT an LSU fan or a flamer just trolling the board. Anyone STUPID enough to claim Miles calls the plays either now or before when Crowton was here simply doesn't know squat about college football. The ONLY thing we agree upon is the playcalling coach at LSU should go....that is Studrawa, NOT Miles. And yes, Miles IS responsible for hiring/firing coaches so that part DOES fall on him.

How does LSU have a lead and the ball with about three minutes to go in a position to run out the clock and make Clemson use their allotment of timeouts and fail to do either? RB Jeremy Hill was having a great night and the best the staff could come up with is three passes in their final possession from one of the worst quarterbacks in modern LSU history. A ten-win fogettable season. What was worse this year: the Saint's defense or LSU's offense? "Bountygate" or the long list of problem-Tigers and their off-the-field woes? The Saints starting the year 0-4 or LSU scoring only one TD in what, four games? Who should have left town? Sean Peyton after his contract was voided by the NFL? Or, Miles to Arkansas? The bet here is the Saints will return to prominence quickly. LSU under Miles promises more misery next season. Much more (This would be a good editorial).

I think they should blame this loss on Les Miles. Miles said in the post game interview "we had to throw the ball" referring to the 3 and out with 2 yards to go for a first. Your quarterback is getting pressure and creamed all game passing. You have not been a good passing team all year and you are going to pass three straight times. What LSU needs is a great OC and Miles needs to do two things. one is give him about a million of his salary (since he is not earning all he gets) and second, don't interfer with the OC. For a guy making $410 per hour, 24 hours a day and 365 days a year you should not be making these poor decisions. This game is LES MILES, poor clock managment and poor decisions. He just seems to get a little confused just a little to often. Seems like the same thing over and over with Miles, he is not a very quick learner!!!

Milestheworst, you forget that MILES is responsible for the OC's. The problem is Miles in not very sharp when it comes to evaluating OC's or DC's. Remember his dual DC mess, neither was a DC but Miles is not talented anough to know it. Miles stays status quo until he gets pressure, like with those two DC's and just like with Croton. Miles pulls the strings and he gets involved, most of Crotons failure were due to Miles involvment!! Miles is never a candidate for other coaching jobs (other than his alma mater), I wonder why that is since he is "the best". No one is looking at him for the NFL. I wonder why. This game is a perfect example of why Miles is laughed at nation wide, they moved away from their strength (running) when all they needed was 2 yards and they move to what they are weakest at!!! Good grief that is typical MILES....he allowed the calls and may have even made them himself. So regardless of what you think, he far far from the best!!

I'm being saying this for last year and this season....Studrawa simply needs to go. When your playbook is so vanilla and you have any weaknesses on offense like a poor passing game, you need to compensate for that via misdirection, throw in a halfback pass or reverse, etc. The job of an OC is to try to compensate for weaknesses in parts of the offense via playcalling. Studrawa is incapable to doing that. He is not in the top 100 OC in college football which is why LSU is not in the top 100 offenses year after year after year.
