LSU’s Madelene Sagstrom finishes fifth
Tulane’s Porras claims first place
SAN ANTONIO— LSU’s Madelene Sagstrom closed the fall golf season with a career best 4-under par 68 to finish in a tie for fifth in the Alamo Invitational Tuesday at the Briggs Ranch Golf Course.
Sagstrom had one bogey in the final round to finish the 54 holes at 3-under 213 (73-72-68). She finished three shots behind winner Maribel Lopez Porras of Tulane, who shot 3-under 69, to finish at 7-under 209 (68-72-69).
LSU finished eighth in the tournament as a team, postingd a 5-over 293 on the final day to finish at 881, 17 over par (291-297-293). Oklahoma was the wire-to-wire winner at 16-under par 848 (279-284-285), eight shots ahead of Texas A&M at 856. UTSA and Tulane tied for third at 863.
Also on the final round, LSU counted a 73 from Nadine Dreher, a 74 from Ali Lucas and a 78 from Lindsay Gahm. Dreher finished 30th in the individual competition.
Tulane coach Andrew Pratt was pleased with Porras’ performance as well as the team as a whole.
“The team played great today and really stepped up for the final round, and I hope this is a turning point in our program as far the team believing in themselves now that they know what they are able to accomplish,” Tulane coach Andrew Pratt said. “What a great victory for Maribel today. I thought she was dialed in and in a solid groove today.”

Baseball
GOLD RECORDS 5-1 WIN OVER PURPLE IN GAME 1 OF INTRASQUAD WORLD SERIES: The Gold team broke a 1-1 tie with four runs in the top of the sixth inning Tuesday en route to a 5-1 victory over the Purple in Game 1 of the LSU Baseball Purple-Gold World Series at Alex Box Stadium.
The intrasquad series, consisting of three six-inning games, continues with Game 2 at 4 p.m. Thursday, and it concludes with Game 3 at 5 p.m. Friday.
Freshman outfielder Mark Laird opened the Gold sixth with a single off of Purple reliever Will LaMarche, and he moved to third on junior infielder JaCoby Jones’ double to right-center field.
Freshman shortstop Alex Bregman drove home the go-ahead run with a single and sophomore catcher/infielder Evan Powell delivered a sacrifice fly to highlight the rally.
“It was a good, competitive ballgame until it kind of slipped away from the Purple in the sixth inning,” said LSU coach Paul Mainieri.
Ryan Eades pitched the first three innings for the Gold, allowing no runs on one hit with three strikeouts. Right-hander Aaron Nola started for the Purple and surrendered one run on one hit in three innings with two strikeouts.
The Gold opened the scoring in the top of the second when Nola hit senior infielder Casey Yocom with a pitch and sophomore outfielder Chris Sciambra produced an RBI double.
The Purple tied the game in the bottom of the fifth as senior outfielder Alex Edward walked, moved to second on freshman catcher Chris Chinea’s single, advanced to third on freshman infielder Geonte’ Jackson’s sacrifice bunt and scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman outfielder Andrew Stevenson.
“Sciambra’s double was a very nice piece of hitting,” Mainieri said, “and Laird did what he’s done all fall in starting that rally in the sixth. Alex Bregman has had a tremendous fall, and he demonstrated again today that he’s ready to make the transition into big-time college baseball.”
The Purple will start Brent Bonvillain on the mound in Game 2 on Thursday, while the Gold will counter with freshman right-hander Russell Reynolds.
