Southeastern sweeps Southern in volleyball
HAMMOND — Southeastern Louisiana swept a three-set decision from Southern on Thursday 25-14, 25-15, 25-12 to open play in the Tangi Tourism Lion Classic.
The Lady Lions (2-3) were led by senior Courtney Donald and freshman Veronica Turk. Donald led all players with 10 kills and Turk contributed six kills, three blocks and an ace for Southeastern. Becky Bekelja added 26 assists, five digs and three kills while libero Megan McMillin tallied 10 digs for the winners.
As a team, Southeastern recorded a .378 attack percentage against the Jaguars (0-5). Michelle Williams’ six kills led Southern, while Marisol Macias recorded 10 digs.
In the first set, Southeastern built a 10-3 lead and extended it to 19-10. Turk recorded half of her six kills in the first set and one of her three blocks. The Lady Lions picked up five points on aces, including a pair by junior Lindsey Young.
Southeastern started slowly in the second set. Southern stayed within a point, 7-6, but falling behind 13-8 called a timeout. Out of the timeout, the Lady Lions extended the lead to eight on another Young ace, sparking her teammates to finish off the set.
On the serving effort of freshman Morgan Todd, Southeastern built a 6-2 lead in the third and final set. The Lady Lions extended the lead to 15-4 before Southern called a timeout. Donald helped finish off the Lady Jags, recording five of her 10 kills in the final set.
Day 2 of the tournament begins at 9 a.m. With Louisiana Tech facing Texas-Pan American. Southern returns to the floor at 11 a.m. to challenge Weber State.
Southeastern Louisiana’s first match of the day is scheduled for 1 p.m. against UTPA. Louisiana Tech and Southern play at 3 p.m. while Southeastern wraps up second-day action against Weber State at 5 p.m.
Soccer
JAGUARS VISIT CAJUNS: In Lafayette, Southern will visit Louisiana-Lafayette at 7 p.m. Friday in ULL’s final nonconference home match at the Cajuns Track/Soccer Facility.
The Cajuns (3-2-0) are coming off of a 2-1 win over Nicholls State on Monday. ULL got second-half goals Maci Andrus and Hayden Gibson to complete the comeback.
It’s the first meeting between ULL (2-0) and Southern (0-2-0). The Cajuns are 7-0 against teams from the Southwestern Athletic Conference with a combined score of 35-1 in the seven contests.
The Jaguars (0-2-0) have losses against Lamar and Nicholls State.
