Jamboree schedules sought

Fall practice for most athletes begins this week. The publication of The Advocate’s Football 2012 special section now just over a week away.

As the Advocate sports department moves ahead toward fall coverage, we are asking all schools for a little help.

Our staff seeks complete schedules for football and volleyball jamborees. This includes the site where the games will be played, teams scheduled to compete and the format teams will use.

For example, football teams traditionally play 10-minute or 12-minute halves. Volleyball often plays a series of 15-point games.

In addition, we’d like to receive rosters for football and volleyball teams.

Schedules and rosters can be submitted by fax to (225) 388-0318 or email to Robin Fambrough at rfambrough@theadvocate.com.

Signees, etc.

The University of Louisiana at Lafayette went the distance for its most recent track and field recruiting class.

Three local distance runners were among the signees for the Cajuns.

Runnels’ Matthew Rice and Catholic High’s Cole Stafford were the local men’s signees. Christian Life Academy’s Anna Katherine Devitt was among ULL’s women’s signees.

  • St. Amant High post player Marvin Brown recently signed with New Orleans-based Delgado Community College. The 6-foot-7 Brown averaged 10 points and eight rebounds a game in 2011-12.

Brown is the second ex-Gator to sign with Delgado. Rashaun Claiborne played for the Dolphins the past two years and has signed with the University of North Alabama.

Arnett, Hill honored

Two local wrestlers, Redemptorist’s Brandon Arnett and Live Oak High’s Cody Hill, were recognized as two of the nation’s top 30 freshman/sophomore competitors by USA Wrestling Magazine.

Arnett was ranked 23rd in the 195-pound weight class. Hill was rated 29th in the 119-pound class.

DHS hires coaches

Barry Whittington and Amy Blanchard have been approved as the new basketball coaches at Donaldsonville High, said Athletic Director Terence Williams.

Whittington replaces Troy Green as the boys coach. Green left the Tigers after one season
to return to his alma mater, White Castle High, as the boys coach.

Whittington served as DHS’ girls coach last season. Blanchard previously coached St. James and East Iberville and will take over the girls coaching duties.

Prep notables

  • The team of Scott Gautreaux, Paul Meyerchick, Monty Douglas and Jeremy Whittington won the Louisiana High School Coaches Association’s annual golf tournament on a scorecard tie-breaker.
