Louisiana Tech’s Hayes, Coleman advance
EUGENE, Ore. — Louisiana Tech jumper Chelsea Hayes and former Tech sprinter Michael Coleman both advanced Friday in the U.S. Track & Field Trials at the University of Oregon.
Hayes jumped 21 feet, 10 inches in the opening round of the long jump, finishing seventh overall.
The top 12 jumpers advance to Sunday’s final.
Coleman ran 20.59 seconds and finished second in his heat to advance to the 200 meter semifinal round. In the opening round, the top three runners in each heat plus the next six times advance to the semifinal round.
Coleman will run in the second heat of the semifinal round at 8 p.m. CDT Saturday.
Former Demons fall short
Former Northwestern State All-Americans Trecey Rew Hoover and Samantha Ford Hatten fell short Friday in their efforts to earn berths on Team USA for the Olympic Games.
Competing in the finals of the women’s shot put, Hoover finished 11th among the 12 finalists with a 54-foot best.
Hatten, throwing in the 24-woman javelin qualifying round, was 18th at 155-0 and did not advance to Sunday’s final.
