LSU’s Brown sets discus mark at USA Junior

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — After a successful freshman season, LSU discus thrower Rodney Brown set a meet record Sunday at the the 2012 USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships with his winning mark of 206 feet, 9 inches at Indiana’s Robert C. Haugh Track & Field Complex.

The previous meet record was 204-3 set in 2009 by Kansas standout Mason Finley.

Brown moved to the top of the leader board with a best of 202-5 in the preliminary round.

Texas A&M freshman Dalton Rowan took the silver-medal with a throw of 201-2.

Brown will compete as a member of Team USA at the 2012 IAAF World Junior Championships on July 10-15 in Barcelona, Spain.

LSU teammates Aaron Ernest and Quincy Downing will also be there. Ernest won his second silver medal of the weekend in the finals of the 200-meter dash Sunday afternoon with a time of 20.88 seconds, behind Tyreek Hill’s 20.57. Ernest was second in the 100 on Friday.

Downing earned his place in the 4x400-meter relay pool for Team USA after a fourth-place finish in the 400 with a time of 46.68 Sunday, behind Aldrich Bailey (45.37), Arman Hall (45.77) and Chidi Okezie (46.55).
