Hahnville downs Zachary

ZACHARY — The Louisiana High School Athletic Association initially banned Zachary’s baseball team from the Class 5A playoffs for its role in a fight during a regular-season tournament game against Teurlings Catholic.

Then the LHSAA’s executive committee declared the Broncos eligible for the postseason just four days before their first-round game. Now second-seeded Zachary is officially out after a tense 2-1 loss Saturday to Hahnville in a regional-round game at Zachary Youth Park.

The Broncos (27-8) fell victim to Mike Ford’s solo homer in the top of the second inning, Cody Farrell’s RBI double in the third inning and a combined four-hitter by starter Jake Cologne and reliever Tyler Lamers.

“We’ve been through so much,” acting Zachary coach Greg Williams said. “It’s been an emotional roller coaster. We knew what to expect. We’re all playing for the same thing. We just didn’t play our game.”

The game had a definite postseason feel, which included a standing-room-only crowd with fans two and three deep against the fence along the left- and right-field lines.

But it was the 15th-seeded Tigers (24-12) who made themselves at home, winning for the 18th straight time since a one-run loss to Jesuit on March 18 and advancing to the 5A state tourney Friday and Saturday at Tulane’s Turchin Stadium.

“Today was just our day,” said Hahnville coach Kade Rogers, who is leaving at the end of the season to become the coordinator of safety, security and emergency preparedness for St. Charles Parish schools.

“I’m happy for our kids. They’re so relaxed and have worked so hard. They came in here and didn’t back down. We’re playing with a lot of confidence right now, and we know we have some unfinished business to take care of. I’m proud of the way we responded.”

The Tigers got all the runs they needed in the second and third innings. Ford led off the second with a solo homer to left field, a line drive off Zachary starter Gabe Von Rosenberg (8-2) that went just inside the foul pole.

Ford continued his postseason hot streak. He had three doubles and four RBIs in Hahnville’s 10-7 first-round victory Tuesday over Covington.

“I knew when I hit it that it was going over the fence,” he said. “I just wasn’t sure if it would be fair or foul. I wanted to put the ball in play. We knew it wasn’t going to be easy coming in here, but I couldn’t be more happy.”

In the top of the third, Travis Faucheaux reached on a fielder’s choice with one out. After Tyler Simmons struck out, Farrell doubled to center field to score Faucheaux for a 2-0 lead.

Cologne retired the Broncos in order in the first and second innings. They broke through in the third on Jameson Fisher’s deep sacrifice fly to center field, which scored Daniel Hodges, who led off with a walk. Zachary never threatened the rest of the way.

“Jake came in and fought like hell,” Ford said. “We needed four or five innings from him, and he gave us the chance to win.”

Cologne (7-2)allowed three hits, struck out three and walked three in five innings.

He also benefited from some sterling defense, including a fantastic play by Dylan Keller in the fifth inning. Keller made the catch, ran into the right-field wall and held onto the ball for the second out, robbing Johnny Mangin of an extra-base hit.

Lamers gave up one hit, struck out one and walked none in two innings. His effort overshadowed Zachary’s three pitchers.

Von Rosenberg allowed five hits, struck out six and walked one in five innings.

, and Trent Crowder and Hernandez combined on two innings of no-hit relief.

So happy for hahnville! Your team did all of us a huge favor by beating zachary. Yeah, that is what I thought...if it is not the players talking trash it is the fans, students, and concession workers. Awesome. Great sportsmanship, broncos! And you can bet the ONLY reason those little punks kept their traps shut was because they were warned and because the head jerk himself, Jessie James Cassard was suspended and likely at his mommy's house! Congrats to hahnville! Well done! See you at Tulane! Hey Zachary, what you gonna do now? You gonna picket and file more lawsuits?!?! How does that crow taste? Have another slice of humble pie!

GREAT JOB TIGERS!! And just FYI from an attending HHS Tigers fan - the Zachary players were fine. I didn't hear anything negative at all about them from our boys. It was the people in the concession stand and the ZHS students attending the game who were rude! I got that first hand.

Oh yes sir, I believe every word. You obviously have a double standard set for this baseball team and yourself. Constant trash talking.... Constant running of the mouth..... Sounds a lot like the three post I read from you. To you bleach = thugs, hugs= thugs. I guess a team that shaves there heads are nazi's. Get serious! Nobody condoned Zachary's actions, they took full responsibility for them. All are none. Let one in, let all in! And thats what they did. Their Daddy's should have had there back, as you obviously have yours. My oldest son is seven, so this daddy's outlook is completely different than yours. I don't know what school you are with, and frankly don't care. But hopefully ZHS will see you next season. If so come to the Zachary side, you can ask for either name you want to use. We can watch the game together and you can show me every time ZHS does what you accuse them of. My guess is you won't. And you'll hide behind a computer screen and talk ***** after ***** Until then try to worry about trash talking and mouth running you can control, yours.

Gordy, Gordy, Gordy. Do you honestly believe everything that you are posting? Bleaching hair, coating your face with eyeblack and giving coded hugs and handshakes hardly qualify as bullying. Ridiculous, yes. It's the constant trash talking, the constant running of their mouths...each and every game...all condoned by the head coach.. that is pathetic. The Bully Broncos should have never been in the playoffs, but they were. In the end, poetic justice prevailed...and the bleach boys were sent home packing...oh, wait, they were home...and lost! What a shameful lesson this teaches kids. Fight, talk trash...and nothing will happen. Daddy has your back. What a joke! Gordy, it looks like this has become a two person forum, therefore I'm gonna wrap it up on my end. Your perspective is wrong. That's the bottom line. Zachary baseball is the eyesore of this area. End of story. SEE YA NEXT SEASON....BRONCO BULLIES!!

I may be..... Were you at the fight? I doubt it. You believe what you heard from another one of your hater friends. Read the tourney directors report that the LHSAA seem to leave out of their hearings. You read something in a paper so that's what you run with. Congrats to Hahnville, no tears. ZHS can handle losses, a quality that Jeff here can't cope with. You don't like trash talking yet your on a public forum trash talking a high school baseball team. I don't care what you think, everybody except you Zachary haters know, is that if you let TCHS back in they deserved to get a chance. Your telling me Zachary talked and got put out, TCHS throws the first punch, clears the benches first, and there back in???? That's what the ZHS parents were fighting for. Jeff are you a LSU fan? What about a Rajun Cajun fan? I guess those teams that went to the college world series with blond hair were emenim want to bees too. If hair, eye black, hand shakes is what bullies you..... Then standing up is probably something you rarely do!

Gordon: you are the idiot. You say "if the process was done right....Teurlings was let back in....". Well, pal...Teurlings was let back in because they did NOT START the fight. Zachary High School Baseball players and coaches were the instigators...period, end of story. The only reason they were allowed back in was because the cowards and clowns at the Lhsaa were scared of potential litigation. Nevertheless, take your medicine like a big boy. You lost at home...in front of the same people we condone your bully-brand of baseball. Now, go bleach your hair (will the real slim shady please stand up), pull your eyeblack down your face to hide your tears...and come up with a new brand of trash talking for next season. Go ahead and un-reserve your hotel rooms in New Orleans. The 2012 version of Bully Bronco Baseball is OVER!

Jeff I guess your the type to roll over and let everybody take it from you. If the process was done right you wouldn't have heard anything from Zachary. TCHS was let back in for fighting, didn't hear you running your mouth. Proud of Zachary. ZHS, don't ever let an idiot like this put a finger in your face and tell you your no good. Stand up for what you believe. Jeff what does it make you, to sit hear and talk about kids. It bothers you they bleached their hair? It bothered you the put eye black on? It bothered you how they shook hands? Get a life, a girlfriend, something! Justice was served ZHS, the right thing was done. TCHS was allowed to play and so were you. This guy doesn't know you, this guy doesn't care what type kids y'all are. Anybody that has spent anytime wiith you knows your not thugs. Be proud, hold your heads high!

JUSTICE IS SERVED! I speak for many people when I say that we are thrilled this team was eliminated. Shame on the Lhsaa for even allowing them back into the playoffs...when they had already LOST their one and only appeal! How a second appeal "magically" happened....overturning the ruling is beyond me. Zachary High School baseball has been a bunch of trash talking punks for years...and it all starts with the head coach Jessie Cassard. A grown man encouraging such behavior is sickening. I have witnessed this first hand. Last year at Tulane...this ball club showed up with their hair bleached, their eye black pulled down on their faces like "war paint"...and they ran their mouths the whole time. When the game ended...they went home with their tails between their legs...because they LOST! In the pregame introductions that day, after all the players were lined up...and the coaches were then announced, the head coach..and the assistants...went throught the entire line of players..giving each and every player some type of "what's up dawg" hug or fancy handshake....each and every player. We could not help but laugh at such a display. Grown men...acting like borderline thugs. It's a wonder the team didn't wear their pants "sagging" like so many hoods do around town these days. Zachary, you didn't belong in the playoffs...and now you're out...period. Shame on the Lhsaa...what a gutless organization. Shame on those Zachary parents...who cried like babies..and picketed the Lhsaa headquarters begging for another appeal...of the appeal...of the appeal...so on and so forth. Randal Von Rosenberg, how does it feel now?? You petition the court for an injunction?? Great example set by all parties. You have clearly sent out a message telling kids that it's ok to fight..no big deal. Go ahead and fight...nothing will happen to you. Only a small fine for the school....but go ahead and fight..because there will be no consequences. I hope you are proud. GOOD BYE ZACHARY!!
