Schmitt captures  City Park golf title

Former LSU golfer Phil Schmitt fired a 61-64 —125 to win the championship flight of the Historic City Park Championship golf tournament Saturday and Sunday.

Schmitt was followed by Brett Baker (61-65 —126) and Donny Schmitt (64-65 —129) in the championship flight. Baker also made a hole-in-one on his first hole of the tournament, No. 1, which was a par-3 playing at 149 yards.

Chuck Laudermill (67-62 —129) won the first flight, while Danny Nelson (69-66 —135) took the second flight. Wayne Kippers (71-67 —138) was the third flight winner, while Barry Carline (75-69 — 144) won the fourth flight. Matthew Shirley (80-83 —163) won the fifth flight.

RIVERLANDS WINS LGA CLUB TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP: In Kinder, Riverlands Golf and Country Club shot a 416 to win the Louisiana Golf Association Club Team Championship on Sunday at Koasati Pines.

Riverlands, of LaPlace, was led by Andrew Noto, who shot a 67 for the low round of the day on Sunday. Also for Riverlands, Jason Noto fired a 71, James Fuselier had a 72, Rick Bratcher and Robert Doyle each shot 76, while Vernon St. Amant had a 77

OakWing Golf Club of Alexandria finished second (420), led by 71s on Sunday from Craig Campo and Rod Baronet. Ben Hargis and Jason Lewis each shot 73, Frank Brame had a 76 and Keith Breazeale a 77. Hebert Municipal Golf Club of Lafayette was third, led by a pair of 71s from Thad Weber and David Duhon.

The Oaks at Sherwood 1 team of Michael Drury, Garrett Westbrook, Daniel Preston, Steve Jordan, David Mahaffey and Chad Hurt finished fourth with a 435, while the University Club team of Kevin Gros, Frank Schroeder, Scott Haynie, Dean Napoli, Ross Berthelot and Steve Thompson was eighth with a 445. The Oaks at Sherwood 2 team of Tanner Underwood, Bird Guidry, Stephen Cavell, Dillon Mathies, Bubba Vicknair and Clint Ferguson was 10th with a 452.

DOSS WINS WESTDALE TITLE: Jan Doss had a two-day low net score of 137 to win the Westdale Ladies Handicap Tournament recently at Webb Park.

Gaynelle McNeil (139) finished second, while Linda Booth (145) was third. Glinda David (148) was fourth, followed by Ann Flack (150).

Libby Smith won the longest drive competition in Divison A, while Booth was the Division B winner. Flack won the Division A closest to pin title, while low putts went to Libby Smith (31) in Division A and McNeil (33) in Division B.

COLE AMONG BIG WAG TOURNAMENT WINNERS: In New Iberia, Jordan Coleman of Gibsland won the 15-18-year-old boys division of the USSSA Junior Golf Tour Big Wag Tournament held recently at Squirrel Run Golf Club.

Cole fired a 77-78 — 155 to win the age division, while Austin Campbell of Lake Charles and Bret Senette of Franklin (164) tied for second.

Lafayette’s Beau David (161) won the boys 11-14 age group, followed by Zac Cisela of Lake Charles (170) and John H. Davis of Lafayette (173).

Matthew Weber of Scott (87) won the 18-hole 9-11 boys age division, while Eli Ortego of Lafayette (105) was second and Roberto Espinoza (114) was third.

In the 15-18 girls division, Emily Pellerin of New Iberia (181) got the win, followed by Alexis Breaux of New Iberia (212).

Shrayon Thibodeaux of Broussard shot a 113 in the 18-hole girls 9-11 division. Broussard was the only entrant in the division.

Running

SAMUEL, ITO WIN TITLES: St. Amant’s Lenny Samuel and Shima Ito of Baton Rouge won their respective divisions in the Baton Rouge Get Your Rear in Gear 5K on Saturday.

Samuel had a time of 18 minutes, 34.8 seconds to take the men’s title and was followed by Alex Dunbar of Baton Rouge (18:38.8) and Alex Say of Baton Rouge (18:51.3).

Ito was the top women’s finisher in 19:53.6, followed by Lauren Kuhlmeier (21:42.6) and Kristin Wareck (22:30.6) .

Soccer

BRSC TEAMS PARTICIPATE IN STATE CUP TOURNAMENTS: The Baton Rouge Soccer Club had a number of teams compete in State Cup tournaments recently in Baton Rouge and Slidell.

The BRSC U-12 Girls Black team were State Cup champions. Team members include: Lainee Alfonso, Aubrey Barrett, Allison Garrity, Kaylen Howe, Hailey Johnson, Olivia Labarre, Alexis Larimore, Courtney Moggio, Carolyn Monett, Brittany Segalla, Jessica Segalla, Delaney Smith and Clacey Tibbetts. The team is coached by Gary Buete and Kate Holiday.

The BRSC U-12 Boys Maroon team finished as runners-up. Team members include: Austin Barnes, Jeremy Boothe, Samuel Breaux, Robert Carmouche, Connor David, Tyler Johnson, Cooper Katzenmeyer, Devin Melancon, Orlando Melgar, Cameron Restivo, Krystopher Roberts, Reese Robinson, John Rollins and Rees Romero. The team is coached by Paul Fletcher.

The U-12 Boys Black team finished third in its tournament. Team members include: Hayden Armstrong, James Cerise, Griffin Fetters, Grant Gallegos, Cole Kissam, Caleb Pajares, Logan Roberston, Max Sager, Kenneth Schafer, Kyle Segalla, Jack Shelby, Collin Turner, Sethan Ward and Deven Zezulka. The team is coached by Fares Karadsheh.

The BRSC U-10 Boys Red team finished as the Slidell State Cup runners-up. Team members include: Logan Breaux, Carson Cooper, Hayden Daniel, Michael Day, Ben Katzenmeyer, Jared Levatino, Ian Moggio, Tanner Morales, Reginald Morrison III, Tosh O’Rourke, Tyler Planchet and Parker Sanchez. The team is coached by Oscar Giron.

Baseball

PONCHATOULA TEAM TAKES TITLE: The Ponchatoula Wave went 4-0 to win the 9-under AA division at the USSSA Terror Classic Tournament recently in Thibodaux.

Team members include: Anthony Cazedessus, John Robert Gardner, Blaine McMorris, Bryce Lipscomb, Brock Milton, Braylon Monistere, Preston Disher, Collin Husser, Kirk Landry and Collin Fernandez. The team is coached by Bryan Gardner, Darron Landry, Daniel Husser, Brad Milton and Branden Lessard.
