BRCC sweeps Meridian
The Baton Rouge Community College softball team swept a doubleheader against Meridian on Tuesday, winning the opener 14-0 and the nightcap 5-2.
In the first game, the Bears scored eight runs in the first inning.
Haley Grantham got the win.
Natalie Powell went 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBIs, Aly Williams was also 2-for-3 and Dara Butler went 2-for-2 with three RBIs.
In the second game, BRCC jumped out 5-0 through five innings.
Butler finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, Williams went 1-for-2 with a triple, Shumond Hughes was 3-for-3 with a double and Mallory Boudreaux finished 1-for-2 with a double. Page Fink got the win.
SOUTHEASTERN, NORTHWESTERN STATE SPLIT DOUBLHEADER: In Natchitoches, the Southeastern Louisiana softball team closed its league road schedule by splitting a doubleheader with Southland Conference foe Northwestern State on Tuesday evening at the Lady Demon Diamond.
Southeastern improved to 11-32 overall and 3-13 in Southland Conference play. Northwestern State (19-26. 7-11) was eliminated from league tournament contention.
Southeastern finished with 11 hits and took advantage of five Northwestern State errors to take the nightcap, 10-2, in six innings.
Sophomore second baseman Megan McCollum led the way, going 3-for-4 with a home run, a double and three RBIs.
Junior centerfielder Michelle Duhe, senior catcher Meghan Gomez and sophomore first baseman Tori Sheppard each drove in two runs. Junior Kati Morse (3-4) scattered five hits in a complete-game victory.
In the opener, Northwestern State rallied for three runs in the bottom of the 10th inning for a 4-3 victory.
Sophomore first baseman Brianna Rodriguez singled home the game-winning run against Kenna Terry (3-15), who struck out a season-high six batters and scattered five hits in 9.1 innings.
McCollum, junior right fielder Katie Doyle and sophomore shortstop Kayla Elswick each drove in runs for the Lady Lions in the loss.
Nicholls State, McNeese State each take one: In Lake Charles, Nicholls State University softball team came back from an 8-0 loss in the first game of a doubleheader to take the nightcap with a 3-2 win over McNeese State.
In the first game, McNeese starting pitcher Tiffany Denham (10-8) held Nicholls State to one hit.
The Cowgirls (26-17, 9-7 Southland) had 12 hits in the five-inning shutout.
Katie Moulder (5-14) took the loss for Nicholls (12-27, 6-8), giving up seven earned runs on 12 hits. She finished with one strikeout while walking none.
McNeese scored three runs on four hits, including two doubles, in the first inning.
In the second game, Ashton Bennett (6-8) tossed a complete game four-hitter and hit her first home run for Nicholls.
Leah Andrus had the game-winning, two-run single in the third inning.
Meagan Bond (15-8) took the loss, lasting 2.1 innings. She was charged with all three runs on four hits.
