Milburn Jr. McDonald’s All-American nominee
McKinley High School senior Darryl Milburn Jr. was honored as a nominee for the McDonald’s All-American basketball game on Tuesday.
The 6-foot-3 Milburn was honored during an assembly at the school on Tuesday, according to McKinley Principal Armond Brown.
Milburn averages 20 points per game for the Panthers (15-11, 5-2) who are in contention for the District 5-5A title and a Class 5A playoff berth.
The nomination makes Milburn eligible to play in the annual McDonald’s game set for March 28 in Chicago.
The other Louisiana nominees are all from the New Orleans area: St. Augustine’s Javan Felix, Riverside Academy’s Ricardo Gathers, and John Curtis’ Malik Morgan, an LSU signee.
Both McDonald’s girls nominees, Helen Cox’s Kuaneshia Baker, an LSU signee, and John Curtis’ Derreyal Youngblood, are also from the New Orleans area.
Riverside sanctioned
Two-time defending Class 2A boys basketball state champion Riverside Academy was fined $500 for a violation of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association’s sports season rule.
The Rebels of coach Timmy Byrd were sanctioned for scheduling and playing extra games during the Allstate Sugar Bowl National Prep Classic held Jan. 19-21 at the Alario Center in Marrero, according to the ruling released Monday.
The sanctions do not affect Riverside’s playoff status for 2012 or the four extra victories picked up by playing in a second bracket at the national tournament. LHSAA Executive Director Kenny Henderson said the second bracket constituted a second tournament and put the Rebels over the LHSAA limit of four tournaments in a season.
Riverside was placed on disciplinary probation for one year, had its number of tournaments for 2012-13 reduced by one, and will be prohibited from hosting a tournament, including the National Prep Classic, in 2012-13.
Zachary girls add win
The LHSAA-levied sanctions against another New Orleans area basketball team, Helen Cox, gave Zachary an added victory.
The Broncos lost a nondistrict game to Class 4A Cox on Jan. 6 in Harvey. On Monday, the LHSAA announced that fifth-ranked Cox would have to forfeit 23 wins, including its win over Zachary.
