Donaldsonville & Livonia Capsules

Donaldsonville Tigers

Head coach: Benny Guilbeaux (5-7 overall)

2013: 5-7 (1-3 District 9-3A)

Last playoff appearance: 2013 (lost to Church Point in 3A regional round)

That was then: The Tigers had their ups and downs with new starters in key positions during Guilbeau’s first season as head coach, but nearly upset highly regarded Church Point in the playoffs.

This is now: This is expected to be breakthrough season for Donaldsonville with a total of 14 starters returning — seven on both offense and defense. There’s star power with WR/DL Stephen Sullivan, who teams with Jacquel Gant to provide one of the state’s tallest WR duos.

Ask The Advocate: QB Tyler Brown got a baptism by fire last season, but should reap the benefits this season thanks to a number off weapons. The Tigers will be tested early by a tough schedule, but could emerge as a surprise team in Class 3A.

Projected starters on offense (spread):

QB Tyler Brown, HB Tajh Gillard, FB Koby Bozemon, WR Jamal Dunn, WR Stephen Sullivan, WR Norman Simmons, WR Jaquel Gant, LT Floyd Foster, RG Tyarise Stevenson, C Jason Mills, RG Deondre Watis, RT Dwight Wright

Projected starters on defense (3-4):

DE Floyd Foster, NT Tyarise Stevenson, DE Dwight Wright, SAM LB Raymond Collins, JACK LB Delveron Millien. WILL LB Tajh Brown / Dion Deal, MIKE LB Rene Gibson, FS Aaron Julien, SS Percy Cargo, CB Cardell Forcell, CB Kenyatti Solomon / Jacoby Smith

Livonia High Wildcats

Coach: Guy Mistretta (First year at Livonia, 86-35 overall)

2013: 14-1, (6-0 District 5-3A); after LHSAA forfeits 7-8, 3-3

Last playoff appearance: 2013 (lost to Union Parish in double overtime in Class 3A title game)

That was then: The Wildcats captured the imagination of fans beyond their community with a magical run to the Class 3A title game. This is a program that gradually improved over a series of seasons under former coach David Brewerton.

This is now: Ex-Redemptorist and Dunham coach Guy Mistretta is the new coach and though the Wildcats graduated a number of key players. It’s fair to say this is now a successful program and the addition of talented players from now now defunct Pointe Coupee Central only adds to that.

Ask The Advocate: Livonia is considered one of the favorites to make it back to the 3A title game. Look for the Wildcats to play with a chip on their shoulders because of the forfeits in football and baseball due to an ineligible player discovered last spring.
