Gonzales' Greg Hackney leads after second round of eighth Bassmaster Elite Series event

UNION SPRINGS, N.Y. — Gonzales national touring pro Greg Hackney took the lead after Friday's second round on crystal-clear Cayuga Lake in the eighth Bassmaster Elite Series event of the year.

Hackney went into the four-day bass tournament with the lead in the prestigious Angler of the Year points race, and bolted to the top of the 109-angler field with an impressive 23-pound, 1-ounce catch on his five-bass limit.

His two-day total is 43-6 and is more than three pounds better than Texas pro Todd Faircloth at 40-4. Hackney won $500 for his second-round lead.

Both anglers reportedly targeted grassbeds for their catches. First-day leader Brandon Palaniuk from Idaho fell to ninth place after catching 16-5 Friday.

Two other Louisiana anglers, Cliff Crochet from Pierre Part and Dennis Tietje didn't fare as well as Hackney. Crochet moved up 16 places from his 75th spot after Thursday's first round and was in 59th place with a 26-6 total. Tietje finished 80th at 22-2.

Only the top 50 anglers survived the cut to make it to Saturday's third round, and only the top 12 anglers will compete in Sunday's final round. The winner will earn $100,000.

Weigh-in times are set for the final two days at 2:15 p.m. (CDT) and can be viewed on the Bassmaster website: www.bassmaster.com.

This tournament will be featured on Bassmaster TV set to air on ESPN2 at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27.
